Well. for the first time ever, I was the high bidder on E Bay. I got that Gold Cup 8.5' rod I was bidding on. It went (supposedly BRAND NEW) for only $30.00. The blank says it is rated for 10-17 # line. I was planning on spooling it with 14#. for surf and pier casting. It says it is rated for 5\8 - 3 oz. What do ya'll think? I have never fished a Gold Cup. Now for the kicker - I was planning on putting a Penn 710 or 704 Z on it but am open for options. I can not spend more than $100.00. What would your choice be between the Penn's (or another reel perhaps)? I mostly soak live and cut bait. Thanks, and let's have some fun. This weather is got me going!

gowge (209.27.70.207) from FLORIDA says *** L@@K Over The New Daiwa Emblem X*****T MODELS
If you're expecting to eventually need distance, and want a modern design high performance reel that a lot of guys are saying will reach, have a look at the new Daiwa Emblem X models... Plenty of line capacity, and when you decide to fish from the beach with a bigger rod, you can still use the same reel....

Mike P (207.97.160.48) from NEW YORK says Of the two Penns...
The 710 will balance an 8-1/2' rod better than the 704, if you are going to be holding it between casts. The 704 does have bigger drag washers and they dissipate heat better due to the larger surface area. The 710 should hold enough 14# line to do the job, the 704 will hold over 300 yards of that line.
You might want to check out either the Shimano Baitrunner 3500 or 4500 if you are going to do maily bait fishing from the pier. They will run right around your $100 ceiling. In additon to that long casting Emblem Gowge mentioned, the Daiwa Black Golds have great reputations for durability. The BG 30 should work for you and daiwa dropped the prices this year (one caution with that--this may mean they are about to be discontinued).

Saltheart (192.94.94.61) from RHODE ISLAND says For chunking get the 704Z
As you say you are mostly chunking so the 704Z is the reel to get. as Mike P said , they have agood drag and you won't be holding it and casting it all night.

You could also go to 20 lb Big game line on the 704Z. it'll still hold plenty.

John B (204.71.117.2) from NEW JERSEY says Penns
There is another Penn option. Penn is making their Powergraph series of reels in larger versions now. This line of reels have been out for a year, and so far there has been no one screaming about how bad they are. I would consider no news as good news. I'm not saying it's a definate purchase, but it might be something worth looking into...
