SUBJECT: # 6808: Fishing report, Outer Banks, Fri-Sun: trout and thieves were working

Submitted by Jimbo (208.150.18.2) from NORTH CAROLINA on 1/10/2000 5:42:00 PM

Pulled into Buxton from Charlotte at 3 am Friday, grabbed some short zzzs and hit the beach about 8 with O-bee, Ed, Ketchmo and Pressingham. Fished the hole north of Avon pier, I caught two specs about 15". We Ran into Mo, One Bait, Joe Gag, Brocaca and others further north and set up the next hole down.

There were about 12 guys fishing three holes separated by two points/flats. The holes were connected by a channel between the outer bar and the head of the flats. Everybody was hitting the edge of, or first wash in, the holes. I concentrated on trying to hit that channel between and at the heads of the holes (about 25 to 60 yards out, depending on tide). Nailed a 17-incher on the second cast. I was winging as hard as I could cast, every time, as if throwing my 12-footer and 8 oz. for distance. Even though fish were being caught in the first wash, I felt more successful at the head of the holes and in the sucks connecting holes. Caught 15 for the day and kept 7, best was a 21-incher.

The highlight, however, was something I didn't get. A cast, the tap, snapped my wrist and it took off. Drag singing, all I could do was follow it down the beach. At one point, it rolled and a tail three times the width of my hand came out of the water. After a 50-yard tow due south, the hook pulled. My jig came back with a scale embedded on the point. Striper, I think, but Mo said don't be so sure - a monster trout could do the same thing.

Friday night it was fried trout and good company. We awakened to find for the second Buxton-stay in a row the Baby Buxton Beer Burglars hit us. Coolers and truck beds were rifled. Then to top it off, they hit again on Saturday night, both at our motel and where O-bee and Ed were staying. Apparently it happens all the time. One of the motel employees went around to warn folks thieves were about. They must be verrrrrry sharp criminals to have eluded the crack Buxton Police for these past two years. Lock EVERYTHING up.

Saturday was great weather. Fished in t-shirts part of the day. Hit the holes north of Avon. I had good luck at low tide wading to the top of the flat and casting to the head of the hole at the outer bar. Nailed 'em. Caught 17, kept four, including two citations; biggest was 4.72 lb. Several of the fellas went up around ramp 27 and found a little better class of fish. Brocaca came back with a fat 6-lber. Somehow, with all those trout hangin' around the holes, I managed to coax in a lost puppy (only one we saw or heard of for the weekend). About 15 inches, I scratched him behind the ears and told him to send Momma back to me.

Saturday night Pressingham took one of our trout fillets, trimmed it and served it as sushi with a terrific sauce the likes I've never had (I don't get out much, see). Never thought I'd scarf down raw trout and beg for more. Then he fixed panang (sp?), a Thai dish with chicken, a coconut milk-based gravy and shaved lime tree leaves. Whoa! Sunday morning we cleaned up and hit a coupla holes on the way out. I caught 8 more, including another big one, kept two.

I spent the whole 2.3 days throwing a 3" curly-tail grub, glitter greenish/clear-with-black-flecks body and chartreuse tail; half-oz. red jighead. Other colors and Fin-s tails were working some, too, but mine kept getting bit, so it wasn't coming off. Tied it to a 2-ft. flourocarbon leader, teeny-tiniest barrel swivel, 8-lb. test Fireline and an 85-modulus rod. Oh, yes, bunker oil on the grub. With the wind blowing down the beach and a belly in the line, I'm convinced I felt and caught fish others weren't. Most of my fish struck short and soft and didn't pick it up till the 2nd or 3rd strike. The fishstink may not have helped any, but it made me more confident they could find the jig in the murky water, or return when they missed it.

The striper action was off, but Ketchmo, Ed and O-bee all caught good fish, and I got to listen to my drag scream. The only downer (other than the Buxton thieves) was spotting some guy north of ramp 34 with a 5-ft. shark on the beach, bashing him in the head repeatedly with a hammer.

Man, two or three times a year just isn't enough for the trip to Mecca.
