SUBJECT: # 6809: Sabre

Submitted by Eelman (63.21.184.106) from RHODE ISLAND on 1/10/2000 7:25:00 PM

There is definatly a difference. Both of my sabre blanks are slow action rods which, means they bend almost into the butt. Both the 1087 and the 1088 and, both are plum colored rods.I had wanted a new blank and asked the guy who builds my rods to order me a 1087.When he got it in,and I saw it.I was amazed to find that the 1087 he had was a fast action rod, only bending in the first foot and a half of the rod.The tip was also much smaller. Also the rod overall was no where near as stout. This is now the rod that sabre calls the 1087 and it is a black blank.Im as confused as the next guy?

I have nothing against fast action rods, some people prefer them.I just like a slow action rod.The only fast action rods I use are for small lures and small bucktails. The guy that makes up my rods was as surprised as I to find that thye blank had changed without notice! I have know idea why they (sabre) did this.I just wish someone could get to the "bottom" of the missing plum 1087 and 1088 blank situation. Do they still make them? my rods are 5 years old now and I would like another one.

The price I paid for each blank back then was in the 60 dollar range and I thought they were the best bargain around.Seems a lot of blanks these days are coming in with fast actions, Gloomis is famous for this .Anyway its too bad they stoped making a couple of kicka## blanks.

Face it, you're gettin' old already! *g*. Tackle is movin' on to the next generation of design - actually, those "parabolic" action rods are more like glass than graphite. I bet they will come back to offering something like you want if there's enough demand, but it's also likely, the materials used in your favorite blank is becoming scarce. I noticed that over the years - famous rods of long ago have descendents with similar actions, but in a newer material. Maybe Saber thought the new rod represented a step forward in the evolution of the blank - not a copy of the old action, but a rod made on the same mandrel, but with more modern materials. Bill, did the new blank flex more down in the butt section? Less? You mentioned "Also the rod overall was no where near as stout." Were you referring to the blank diameter, or overall strength? If it's not as strong as the previous model - same number designation, then I'm with you - Saber has surely made a blunder... Good Luck finding a new/old model blank. What are the specs on the rod blank you want? Casting weight - length - butt/tip diameter, slow/parabolic action, etc. Maybe someone out there is aware of another mfr. blank that has that particular action you're after...

Hi gowge, what I meant was overal strength.I like a 9 foot rod that can handle one and a half too 3 ounces with a slow action.I still feel this type of action is best at tiering fish out.I am also used to the arc I get while casting with this type of action. You dont have to "load" the rod as much with the cast as you do with a fast action rod. Also,The tips on those faster action blanks dont give me enough leverage to haul a 30 pound bass out of a rockpile. The new blank is overall wimpy next to what I have.As you know im not a finese fisherman,I am a meat guy and want all the strength I can get.All my rods are now graphite but, I have to admit they canot handle the type of abuse I used to give my old lami glass blanks. While graphite is very strong, You cant bounce it off bridges and hit it on rocks like you could with the glass type.Anyway,Im no expert and have not purchased a new rod in a while I think its time to shop around and see whats out there.Even the gloomis rods I have are all 1994 models and those have changed also. They dont make the same models anymore. Its just like reels they come out with a new one every week! Its hard to keep up! talk soon.

Bill, should you find such a blank in the 8'6" to 9'6" range let me know. I too favor that softer action in a plugging rod. One thought process for me at this time is the SSC100m St Croix blank. It is a 10' blank in 2 piece. The tip section is about 2/3 of the blank so trimming 1' off the butt should not ruin the action. I have the 10' in a casting rod and it only weighs about 12oz total with the action you describe.

If you have a better thought or find a sabre in the 1087 that is moderate action let me know.

    Eelman:

Check with the custom rod builder/supplier Fishin-Fin-Addict at 800-673-3474 (FISH). They have the plum colored blanks that they sell under their own name. I understand that these are the same plum colored blanks sold by others. So he may have what you are looking for left in stock. If not, I have a rod made on a Seeker glass blank that behaves very much like what you describe. However, it is only a 7 footer. The blank is a Seeker 708. It is my favorite raw power rod for eeling bass and chunking night blues. If you can't get what you want, maybe you can get what you need in a Seeker e-glass blank. Check with your builder or Fin-Addict for a 9 foot Seeker blank.

Check out a Lami SMB1083M. The last one I built for myself I trimmed the tip about 3" and it is truly a stick to be reckoned with. It's one sweet caster and could still harvest one of Papa Bull's shopping carts.
