i recently started making my own wooden lures about a year ago.most people seem to make there's out of pine or cedar because this wood has good boyancey, and is a softer wood to work with.my buddy uses a small lathe to cut his lures out.and one guy i know actually carves them out by hand.i use hardened dowels.you can purchase them from any hardware store in a large variety of sizes.i use a belt sander to shape my plugs.it's alittle dusty, but with adequate ventilation it's not bad.you can pick one up at a wood working shop,or some hardware stores.a small 3/4 horse will run you in around 100 bucks.the one i have has a one inch belt and five inch disc with a miter gauge.you can taper the nose of the plug from 5 to to 45 degrees.for plugs i use in the bays, say in around the 3 to 5 inch range,i'll use a 3/4 inch,.062 dia. screw eye,and a #3 heavy split ring.on larger surf size plugs, pencil poppers,or larger chug bugs of up to 5 to 7 inches i'll use a 1 1/2 inch .072 dia,. screw eye,and a #5 heavy split ring.i know that alot of people won't even waste their time using a plug unless they are wire-thru,but i haven't lost any fish yet due to the use of screw eyes,so until i do i'll stick with the screw eyes.one thing about hardened dowels though.you have to pre drill all your holes for the screw eyes.the wood is so hard if you don't you'll snap off the screws before they are set in all the way.i don't know if it helps or not,but i apply a thin coat of apoxy to the threads before setting them.another plus of the dowels is they are much more dense and heavy than pine or cedar, and they throw far.i haven't had one soaked in the water long enough to see if they become water logged yet,but i would think that the sealer should prevent this for quite awhile.i use a dremil to hollow out the nose of the lures for chugger type plugs.and i dremil out spaces for large over sized doll eyes.you can pick up doll eyes at most any craft store.or you could use large rhinestones for some real flashy eyes as well.as for paint,i use regular spray paint.two coats of white for a base, and then what other colors you desire.with alittle practice you can do some pretty nice paint jobs.work from light to dark.and you can avoid hard lines, and have the colors blend from one shade to another.i also like to dress all of my rear hooks with bucktail, flashabou,or crystal flash.i first used polyurathane for a clear coat, but on lighter colors such as white or yellow, the secod coat would kind of stain,or fog up the original color.i find that clear enamel is a better clear coat.you can put on as many coats as you like and it won't stain the colors, and it has a much harder finnish than urathane.yikes, guess this got alittle long winded, sorry about that.but i love to make lures, and tend to rattle on to long when i get talking about it.i am currently making up a page with some of my plugs on them, but until i do,if you want,e-mail me and i'll send you one.hope this helps you out alittle.

I too have made a few, very few. I started out with 1" dowel rods, to make a 6-8 " trolling lure. I use a wood rasp, kinda a cheese greater kind of thing. It takes the wood off pretty easy. Some I will start with a 45* angle on the head to make it dive, others will have a point or rounded head to stay up. Instead of screw in eyes, I will drill a hole in front and two more for the hooks, and epoxy a swivel in to the wood. Then attach a split ring. I also don't attach them together with wire, but you can, if ya get a long drill bit. I epoxy a lead "disc" to the belly to help it run true. I have these quarter sized lead discs left over from finishing my X-ray suite, they are to cover the nails which hold up the leading on the walls. Plastic doll eyes will also be glued on, go for the biggest eyes that will fit.
