SUBJECT: # 7302: Rod Rack Recommendation for SUV Needed

Submitted by Bob L (63.211.184.33) from MASSACHUSETTS on 4/23/2000 8:31:00 PM

I would appreciate any recommendations for a good rod rack arrangement to carry rods on top of an SUV. There is already a factory roof rack. I don't travel great distances and can fit my rods inside but would rather avoid folding rear seats to fit the rods in. Obviously safety and protection of the rods and reels is a concern. Most of my rods are in the 8' to 10' range with both spinning and conventional reels.

I've been using the 6-rod carrier from The Surfcaster for years. While not cheap it works well.

If you're only going a short distance with your rods perhaps an inexpensive lockable ski rack would work.

another great option is to use ski racks,I personnely use a Yakima Roof rack system for my pickup truck cap and then transfer the ski racks to my Explorer roof racks with the clips designed for it from Yakima. The ski racks(for six rods) around $120 bucks clips 20 bucks and 2 locks for 20 bucks or so.Really works great.Ckeck out www.yakima.com

If you don't have license plate on front of your vehicle, you can fabricate an inexpensive rack from a scrap of pressure treated 2x6 mounted on the front bumper license plate holes bu attaching 2x6 w/ stainless 3/8 x 5 carriage bolts and attach pvc to 2x6 with "Clic" clamps screwed into 2x6 w/stainless sheet metal screws. "Clic" clamps can be found at plumbing supplies and all hardware is eithe stainless or plastic, the only maintance you will have to do is on 2x6. I've been using this setup on my Bronco for several years . If you want further info, email me and I'll go into greater detail

Hey bob, all you need is a 3" pvc tube cut it down to about 12" cut as many rods you want to carry. On a board about 1" thick and about as wide as the bar that goes accross your roof rack. The length of the board depends on how many rod holders you make and space them out.

Now buy muffler clamps to fit around the pvc tubing.drill the holes threw the board and tighten up the clamps.(option)paint the board, tubes, clamps to the color that matches your vehicle.

Now either screw the board to the rack or if you want your rod rack to be more portable attach the board to the rack with hose clamps.

For the front rack you can buy these clips on a flat rod i believe they are for like holding tools in your work room.or most b&t or sporting goods store carry the horizontal rod mounting.

    Good Luck
