Tried your skills at the banks, montauk point, race point? I'm not picking on you. You sound like you have extensive experience fish big water and I'd just like to know your real back ground without any bashing or name calling. I know you fish around stamford and when you get to go to Ocean City but they aren't real surffishing capitals. Just trying to understand where your coming from.

Knothead,
While I appreciate where you are coming from, I must decline to answer your questions. A while back, I decided to not give out any more personal information as I don't want to be harrassed in real life anymore.
The spots I mention now could be ones I fish now, or ones I fished extensively before. I might possibly go back to those spots. My new spots though, I keep a secret. Why? I'm not worried about people stealing my fish. I'm worried about people stealing what I got into this sport. Solitude.
While I believe your intentions are good, at least I want to believe that, not everyone holds themselves to those same standards. Aka the on-lookers, site followers, etc. As sad as it is to say, there are people that follow other people around sites for the main purpose of causing trouble.
I say my what I say, and that's it. No more need to back it up with tales of far off places. My policy now is if someone asks a question, if I can answer it I do. It's then up to them to try it if they want. If I can't answer it, I at least try to point them to the person who could. I'm rather tired of the pissing matches. Who's fished what waters. It doesn't mean crap. Size of the fish doesn't mean crap. It's the context in which it was caught is the key.
For example. A 20 lb striper isn't much when you talk to a lot of guys that have been in this sport for so long. How was this fish caught? Was it caught in the open beach where a bunch of 20-40 lb fish had some bunker trapped and every snagged bunker would get pounced? Which can be difficult. Or was it caught in a shallow backwater? Just enough water to cover the fish's back? With light gear with a popper? Which I think is even more difficult.
Here it is, plain and simple. My advice is there. It's up to the asking angler to take it. That's all I have to say.

Pi$$y with you. I'm trying to figure out your level of expertise! And trying to decide if I'd like to fish with you or not. This board isn't or shouldn't be about bashing someone else's opinions.. If you don't like Jaiem then tell him mano y mano. Please don't bring it here! A question was posted about fishing with plugs. We didn't need to get in to a disertation about who your idol was or didn't care! Hey I have and have had idol's , but to go off on a tangent and start trying to open up a can of whoop a#@ on somebody, just seems not to be needed.

Patrick (24.45.185.187) from CONNECTICUT says I think you need to re-read that post.
I didn't start with the Rich stuff. Jaiem didn't know how I felt about Rich. If he knew I didn't like RJ, I doubt he would have brought it up. The first post about him was a bit tongue in cheek.
I went on to explain why I didn't like him.
About idols without going into it. Originally, the point was if someone like Ken could fall to the ocean, then anyone could. It takes one mistake. And while I don't care for Rich, I would never wish him harm.
If you didn't care, you should have stopped reading.
I believe you are mistaken about what was said and what I meant.
Good day,
Patrick

Big D (207.199.168.49) from VIRGINIA says 20# not much?
Man, I'd love to hook into a twenty pounder! Had a big one on once (charter boat, not surf) but we lost it at the net so there's no telling how big. It took me nearly 1/2 hour to get it to the boat, so it was probably at least 20#. One other fellow landed a 43# fish that trip, and the mate thought mine was at least that size. The leader was too long and I couldn't keep the head up because I bumped into the cabin of the boat. Serious bummer. I think the mate was just trying to make me feel good about the lost fish by saying it was as big as the big fish of the day. Nevertheless, I'd still love to land even a twenty pounder. Nothing nearly that big in the surf yet.

Patrick (24.45.185.187) from CONNECTICUT says Oh man, they are around.
I'm not trying to sound like a know it all. I figure I have to put that disclaimer on all my posts now.
Pick and choose your battles.
The first step is finding a spot you think will hold stripers. Hard structure, soft structure. Even freshwater. During the spring run when I get most of my larger fish, the freshwater is the place to look. There are herring around, some alewives too. That's where they want to be. Since hard structure and soft structure get a lot of words said, I'll stick to freshwater on this post. I must say though, there are only certain times when sweetwater will hold well. The other 95% of the time I do fish hard or soft structure.
Don't pass up the skinny water either. All species of animals have a common goal: Pass my genes along. Salmon jumping up rivers, eels travel to the sargasso sea, a mother bear protecting her cub etc.
These areas that get really thin are prime spots. By the time the hatchlings are a better size, they can better compete with the snapper blues. I think snappers grow faster due to their voracious appetite but they come a bit later. Plus, lots of minnows in the backwaters and shrimp. Larger prey don't go back there as much. The need of hunger probably isn't as large as the mama striper's need to spawn.
I could be wrong about this, but a lot of fish I've caught in these backwaters have belly scratches. I assume that this is from them going through the shallow water and scraping rocks and shells. Most the time, my larger fish come from these areas.
Just as a side note, I don't keep these fish. In fact, I don't keep any stripers as any "keeper" is too much fish for me to eat.
I love that these spots. Usually it doesn't take much to trigger them to bite. I see you are from Virginia. Don't know too much about the striper fishery. If you look a little north, there is Chesapeake bay. I'm sure they find similar results as I have.
Big D, don't feel bad, I'm aiming for larger fish now too. I'd like to consistantly get bigger fish throughout the year. And for the record, we don't even get red drum up here. You get stripers and drum ya lucky dog. :)

Montauk esp in the fall you can take fish in the 20# class until your arms hurt. Then again high teens and 20 pounders are schoolies in some minds up there :)

Really amaze me! You can be the most evasive person, i.e., fishing far away places. Earlier this year (spring) you wished for a chance to fish OBX! Now you don't want to leave your little confines. Explore young man! There is a great big world out there! There are people who dream about fishing Cape Cod, Montauk, OBX. If your happy fishing for stripers in the sound and Housatonic then have a great time. I was more curious if you've ever tossed 8 n'bait, or tossed metal at stingsilvers at Spanish. I really don't believe that there would be an entourage following you around trying to copy your style or steal your legendary holes.

Patrick (24.45.185.187) from CONNECTICUT says Stuff I will do in my lifetime.
Maybe I'm saving my goals for my later on life. I don't know.
I would love to fish other places. I'm comfortable here though. A while back, I had problems with anxiety. My doctor told me to think of a happy place. Places I fish are my happy place. So many people think of a city made out of chocolate or somewhere else that will never exist. I got to go to my happy place. A lot of memories are burned in my mind of places I've fished here. It's my home turf. Everyone has a home turf.
The following thing was a little exaggeration. It just seems there are people out there that follow me. One person went so far as to write little tidbits on the places I fish. Love notes. Only stuff I would know. In an attempt to drive me from there. It weathered away and he went back and did it again. I don't know why he did it. Now, one spot, I have water to the north, east, west, south. Nothing to defeace.

Old one (67.216.15.51) from OTHER says Patrick glad to see..
That you do have a happy place!! I have many. Try and concentrate on it the next time you post, and offer some of your sage advice. Don't try and take it to an extreme. You'll see that Everything has a yin and yang, and if you let them people will let you express an opiniion without coming back at you.
