SUBJECT: # 8855: Saltwater lure fishing Submitted by Hendrik van Rooyen (168.209.98.35) from South Africa on 8/13/2002 7:03:00 AM To all you guys who responded to my question, thanks!! Our guys here have started a new thing, that is casting lead around the shank of the hook to get more weight. The first thing you would say is that it will impede the action of the lure. If you compare how the weighted and un-weighted lures swim, there is a difference at a slow speed. However if the weighted lure is retrieved at the speed at which you would for cob (I think you call them Jewfish)etc. the action is excellent. Some of the guys add 60 grams to their Rapalas. The anglers at our Natal coast and Cape coast are using these weighted Rapalas to great effect. The only issue here is to take off your existing hooks and replace with the weighted hooks. I recently registered a patent here in South Africa that allows you to weight your lure without replacing the hooks. I'm having very good sales. I have been thinking of selling my patent to a company in America, but have been advised against it because (they say)most of your fishing is done from boats and trawled in the usual way. Regards Hendrik By the way; any good fishing to be done in Iraq? If so what would be a good time to go? I keep following the news reports but it is confusing. Don't want bullets/gas/bombs flying while I am fishing. There are rumours here that Sadam is a keen big game fisherman. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
