SUBJECT: # 8856: Am going to OBX "last month"

Submitted by Big D (192.85.47.2) from VIRGINIA on 8/14/02 1:50:00 PM

I've been going to OBX in late September or early October for close to a decade and have met with just enough success to keep me going back, but no monsters yet. I keep hearing "You should have come last month." I'm always too late for drum and too early for striper, etc., so forth.

So this year I'm going "last month" - i.e. late August. The house is in Salvo.

We'll have equipped 4x4's available. What are some differences I should expect in the fishing? Should I concentrate on piers or surf? (alas, no boat or bucks for a charter) Are the hot-spots still Oregan Inlet and the Point? How's the beach on the Hatteras ferry side of Ocracoke Island?

Thanks in advance for all your great advice.

I have been fishing that area for almost 20 years in spring and fall, and if you had talked to me I would have told you NEXT month. I hate to potentially bring you down, but late august never comes to mind for fishing the OBX. Late Oct. on through December is the hottest action. Mid spring is also pretty good, I have seen some amazing drum blitzes. And if you are in Salvo in October I would recommend fishing right where you are. The points are good for "blitzes", but the steady action is right there on the north beaches. Hope this helps.

I've been wanting to try early November for years, but haven't been able to make the schedule work out. Eventually, I'll be able to convince one or two of my buddies to take a long weekend or two to chase some drum. Thanks for the good advice.
