I am going to Hilton Head Island in a few weeks and I am going to try to go surf fishing. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips.

I have been going to Hilton Head now for a few years. 3 words.....sharks, rays, and skate. Lots of em. If you fish with squid, mullet, or cut bait...this is what you'll catch. There are schools of Whiting that come through the shallow surf during the late evening. Use a casting net and you will catch a boat load of these. They are all about 12 nches but they taste wonderful.
If you wanna catch the sharks, i recommend a finger mullet rig. A shark will grab your bait and actually swim toward you with it, so if you feel your line go slack suddenly, now is the time to set the hook. An get ready cuz if it is a nice one he will be pissed and take off like a bat out of hell. Be sure your drag is set appropriately. I recommend about 20 lb. test on a 10 ft. rod. Also, there are signs on the beach that say "no shark fishing" so dont tell anyone you are fishing for sharks...but if you hook into a big one, you'll have a blast. I caught a Lemon Shark 2 years ago off the surf that was about 4 feet long and a bull ray that weighed nearly 40 lbs. Both fun catches. Good luck.!
