I will be attempting to go tuna fishing out of my own boat Fri and Sat this week. I need to know where I can get GOOD ballyho's thursday evening or very early Friday? I will probally be pushing 9pm getting in on Thursday. The last time I was at Oregon inlet fishing center The ballyhoo supply was pretty sorry. Now on the Ice. Is there a Fish house thats sells ice at a reasomable price or do you have to do the 16 lb bag thing from the 7/11. Have a 100 gal fish box to ice down along with a bait and lunch cooler. On the hotel thing, Where is a decent place with decent parking for A 25' boat on the lower end of nags head? Thanks in advance.
Hawkeye
PS. Anybody else fish Oregon Inlet next weekend?

Hawkeye, not to get into your bizz but you need to take butters with you this week and go to the point and chunk. If you insist on hoo's they should be no problem down there as they are not being used except by those that cant get butterfish. Craig

Hawkeye1 (192.31.86.34) from VIRGINIA says Ok, but where can I get the butters????
Have no idea on where to get them. I seen your report from the other day Miles. What size and type of hooks were you al useing? I never chunked for tuna but have a lifetime worth of exprince chuming big blues in the bay. I defently want to chunk if I can. Would fresh bunker be Ok if I can find the butters?
I believe they carry flats of Butterfish at Pirates Cove. Something as simple as a mortgage on your house should get you a flat from them.

Tuna Pirate (198.26.132.101) from NORTH CAROLINA says Butter fish at OI
Went out trolling on Sat 10/14 those who had butterfish caught tuna those who dragged ballyhoo wasted fuel and did not catch nothing!!!! Captain Marty's MP 14 1/2 carries Butter fish but he's out (as of this morning) he should get a delivery Wed's or Thurs if you call them with your CC they will hold it for you price is $31.95 for 27 lbs flat. You will need two or three flats also get a frozen chum bag to hang over the side. I usally rig with size 5/0 circle hooks with 12 ft of Jinka 60 or 80 lbs test use a ball bearing swivel with a 3/4 oz or 1 oz egg weight just above. Cut the smaller butter fish in half, bigger one's in thirds keep throwing out three or four pieces every minute or so (if you get a fish make sure someone keeps the chunks flowing). Some use hole pieces for bait others use half pieces hide the hook and strip line continuosly (two hundred yards is not uncommen). Key is to make it look like a natural piece of chunk.
PS don't worry about setting the hook mr tuna will take care of that. good luck. Oh yea one other thing fleet was fishing from the 680 line (680 and 100 fathom curve to just north of the point)

Are you sure about the 5/0 circle hook. I am using 12/0 circles on large rockfish. I guess it depends on what brand. Every brand looks a different size per same size lable. Any word on Tuna from HAtteras inlet?? We could do a day down there. I heard the Kings are hitting well down there.

Tuna Pirate (198.26.132.101) from NORTH CAROLINA says follow up butter fish
Could use 6/0 or 7/0 but when you put it through the butterfish go through his mouth out the gilplate and back through th stomach. Make sure just the edge of the tip of the hook penetrates Mr tuna has very sharp eyesite. Also Wanchese fish house has 25 lbs flats for $25.00 his number is 252-473-5001 and he's open till 6pm. Never fished out of Hatteras don't know whats going there. But the last report I heard was that they were hitting from just south of the point to east of Oregon Inlet (this week end I saw the whole fleet from the 680 to just north of the point) heard good king fishing 6 miles east of OI.
Any other ?'s just ask...

Hawkeye1 (24.15.188.191) from VIRGINIA says Thank's Tuna Pirate
I called Cpt Marty's and they would get some in later in the week and hold them on a CC. I also talked to Cpt Harvey Shiflett of the Outer Limits. He said there was a place in Hampton Va called Amory's. He said to try there on the way down. That where a lot of the butters are comming from. Thanks for the tips, now all we need is a safe trip down and some decent weather. Looks like there is going to be a good ground swell from some storm in the lower atlantic. I can handle the swell as long as it don't have 4' chop on top of it. I will post what the butter deal is in Hampton after I call tomorrow. Later, Hawkeye.

Chris (153.104.29.12) from NORTH CAROLINA says Miles is right
We went to the point this past wknd. I think we were the only boat pulling baits and not chunking. Maybe that's why all 125 boats out there were getting double and triple headers as well as their limit by noon and WCCS all day! (we couldn't catch s***) We should have asked yall on this board before we went out, like you're doing. Good luck and my suggestion is to pay for the butters, it's worth it in gas and fun to pay a little extra to catch some fish.

Another thing I have never caught squat trolling around a bunch of boat chumming. Your best bet is to get as far from the chummers as you can if you are trolling.
