SUBJECT: # 34309: Penn Rods

Submitted by Nynick (208.235.6.65) from ILLINOIS on 4/6/2001 7:56:00 AM

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on "Penn Slammer" two piece casting rods? I am thinking of purchasing one for a trip to Baja in May, to use as a tuna stick. Whadda ya know, good or otherwise?

    Nick,

Where in Baja are you going?

I was there last summer (East Cape) and had a great time!

    Check out my article!

PS - I brought a 2 piece medium spin rod on my trip (not a Penn) and it can very much in handy.

Great article on Baja, enjoyed all the details and photos, what a beautiful place, a fisherman's paradise I'm sure. Especially on a cool, gray day in Boston with the stipers still another month away. At least the Sox are winning (8-3) in the 7th.

It was one of the best fishing trips I ever took. Beat all my expectations. Next time I go I'll be even better equipped and try some different things (like more deep fishing for red snapper). And gotta get that marlin! :)

Article was great. We are headed to East Cape at the end of May. May try to fish some from shore as well as boat fish. The penn was for the boatrod. Are there one or two of you replying from ArtsNFlies, can't tell from the message. Did you talk to anyone who used jigs and or rapala type lures while you were there? N

Thanks for the feedback. The rod seems like a good value, but it is best to hear from someone who has one to be sure. N

If you mean bucktail jigs or rubber bodies, no we didn't use them. But we did use a Deadly Dick to cast to yellowfins on morning. Did very well too. I guess not a lot of guys cast to tuna there. Our guide was very surprised that we were taking fish that way. It seemed reasonable to fish that way. We cast to our false ablies so why not yellows?

Are you refering to Rapala swimmers or those no-lip solid body trolling swimmers? If you mean for former we tried casting a few around some rocky areas hoping for pargo but didn't get any. As to the latter, on my first trip to the Baja we did troll up tuna on one but didn't get to use them this trip. There's only so much you can carry on a plane. ;)

ArtsNFlies - Transfer info - In your article you mentioned East Cape Transfers. I have surfed in vain to try to find a reference to East Cape Transfers. Do you have a link, address or phone number on how to contact these folks, or do you have any info on other transfer services from SJD to the East Cape area? Follow up to your questions - I was thinking of jigs with rubber bodies and to rapala swimmers, in a variety of sizes and body styles. We are bringing hoochies too.

    Definately bring those hoochies!!

As for East Cape Transfers, don't know if they have a web site. The info for them was sent along with the info packet from our hotel.

Do a web search for Playa Del Sol and call them for an info package. It will contain transfer info.
