Heading to the Ft. Walton/Destin area this weekend and would like to do some surf/pier fishing. I am very experienced in locations, baits, and presentation in LA waters, but I've never tried this section of Florida yet. Any suggestions on location, bait and presentation for the Ft. Walton/Destin area would be greatly appreciated. Tight Lines. JC
The people at Half Hitch Tackle in Destin always have the latest fishing info. When you're there, drop by, they're always glad to help.

The NW Fla. Daily News also has a good online fishing report.

If you enjoy steamed seafood I recommend you try the Old Bay Steamer on Okaloosa Island.(Between Ft. Walton and Destin.)The steamed Shrimp, Crab Legs and other seafood are outstanding.

fred (208.60.247.205) from ALABAMA says Pier fishing
You've only got one pier, Okaloosa Island, at Ft Walton Beach. Use Cigars or Alewives, "L-Y's" locally, for king, no more than #7 Malin (80#), leader, less if you will. Gotcha's or Clark Spoons work best for me on Spanish. Spanish usually run best early and late.
If the Spanish are down put a 1 - 2 oz lead in front of a Clark Spoon and max leader (I think it's 30", there's a sign), let it hit bottom then reel as hard as you can until it rises, let it drop and repeat.
If they're high, less lead and just reel as hard as you can.
Night and early morning there are flounder and speck at times.
Pier tel - 850-244-1023 for report. There's a bait and tackle store at the pier.

If you have to go to Destin...Wife insists, mother-in-law insists.....there are no good reasons to go to Destin unless you like high prices, crowds of unruly people, crowds, long waits in lines at restaurants, high prices...you get the picture....but,,,, if you have to go then make sure you select one night to eat at Lagnappe. It's a bit dear, but the food is out of this world. I've been to restaurants all over the world (literally) and it is still one of my top ten. Now why would anyone want to go to Destin ?

I agree that Destin is a tourist trap....Id rather the quaint atmosphere of Perdido or the like, but Im not funding the trip, so I cant complain. Anyway, thanks for all the responses and good luck on the water.

Buck A. Rew (209.255.109.1) from TEXAS says Reasons to go to Destin?
This is coming from someone that lived in Destin when it really WAS a sleepy little fishing village.(1960-72) A 10 hr. trip on Ben Marler's party boat(Her Majesty)was 6 bucks. A day of offshore fishing was an astronomical 75 dollars... Only for the rich folks!
Reasons to go?? The beaches haven't changed since 1960. They're still the prettiest in the U.S. Beautiful, clear emerald green water. Miles of undeveloped beach on Okaloosa Island. Just park and go fish or swim. Try finding that anywhere else in Florida... The fishing ain't half bad either.
A lot of the Destin area has turned into a tacky tourist trap of sorts, and it is crowded... But I still love the damn place. I'll probably continue to make a couple of trips a year until they plant me.
