SUBJECT: # 35182: Commercial fishing in Alaska. Submitted by Sal from CALIFORNIA on 6/20/01 9:48:00 PM As most of you know, i fished King Crab & Salmon on the Bering Sea for 30+ years. Many of you think all the fishermen get rich. Well, some of us did well but others are now fishing for Sokeye Salmon on the Bering sea for $.38 a lb. Back in 1979 we got $1.35 a lb. Hell you can't even buy bananas for $.38 a lb. To make things worse, the asian fleets are fishing the high seas, out past the 200 mile limit, intercepting 75% of the returning salmon. Alaska dept of fish & game will not let anyone fish, until they are certain enough fish stock has gone into the spawning grounds. These guys haven't brought home a pay check in 5 years, sad, but true. Just thought i'd give you guys the update on whats happening on the commercial scene. Sal
