SUBJECT: # 35184: Fishing Line???

Submitted by Billy Jack from TEXAS on 6/21/01 12:14:00 AM

New to saltwater fishing and need advice on line for light saltwater use. Will be fishing for reds and trout on the Texas coast near Port Aransas (flats from a boat and surf wading). I need to re-spool a lightweight spinning reel and casting reel for next week's trip. Color? Green or clear. Weight? 8-12 lb ? Mono or filament? Brands? All ideas welcomed and appreciated. Thanks.

I like to use P-Line Premium in 6, 8, 10 & 12 tests and in 30 for applications needing the stretch factor of mono. P-Line Premium is thin and fluoro coated for abrasion resistance, casts well and lasts fairly long.

In heavier tests, I like PowerPro or Izorline, specifically in 20, 50 & 80. Spectra lines are the new age, offering increased capacities and no stretch. It keeps you in touch with your terminal tackle and bait. You can feel a lot more with spectra, therefore catch more fish.

Leader materials, I like fluorocarbon and the new titanium stranded stuff. You already know the benefits.

I like Fireline. It has virtually no memory and casts beautifully. Just add about 3' of fluorocarbon leader. I use this line whether it is fresh water or saltwater fishing. 12lb Fireline has a diameter of about 4lb test of mono.

Also, I've not seen any problems with fish shying away from the line.

Also, the life on this line is excellent. I would say at least 2 years and you can reverse it on your spool to get more life.

As the expression goes, 'Try it and you'll like it!'.
