Hey fellas,
It's only one week and counting 'til I hit the Gulf with the family. This'll be something like my 6th summer trip to Daupin Island and every time I go down there I swear that I'm gonna catch a big one. So here I am again, making the same promise to myself that I always do. The last two times I journeyed down there I was unable to get on a boat but this time I miraculously made it onto two of 'em. I was hopin' to get the inside scoop on what all you regulars use and how you rig it to catch some monster snapper. I've personally never caught one over 5-6 pounds and I know they way bigger than that. Most likely, I'll be fishing the reefs or wrecks the captain(s) decide to stop at. Much thanks to ya'll out there.

Ok so you want to catch a big snapper. I don't snapper fish often as I normally am after bigger game but this is a good technique. Catch a bonito on top and then cut a big chunk abdout handsize out of the side and stick it on a 7/0-8/0 hook. Drop it down then slowyl reel it up till you start getting nibbled by smaller snapper. Leave it at this level and resist all urges to set hook unitl something WHAMS it. Then set hook and reel in big fish. With the big chunk of bonito it stays on teh hook long enough for a big snapper to find it.

Carl (64.12.106.49) from ALABAMA says Whole cigar minnows or pogies
If you are gonna be on a party boat, use whole cigar minnows or pogies on a "sow rig" while everyone else is soaking cut bait & squid. Or that morning, go to one of the bait shops in DI and get a dozen good size croakers & take them out with you.
To rig either bait, put on a 6-10 oz egg sinker (depending on current), a swivel, then a 50#+ leader about 5' long and a 10/0 circle hook. Dont keep your bait on the bottom. Drop down & then crank up to about 30' off the bottom (most reals take up about 3'/turn). resist the temptation to set the hook and dont start reeling until a big one really pulls on it. Also, if you are fishing a party boat, get there early & claim a spot on the stern (I prefer a corner). It's a lot easier to stay untangled there.

I agree with Speck-tackular. We always used to fish with live spots and croakers because small snapper mess with cigar minnows and pogies too much. Then my fishing partners cousin came up from south Florida and told us to use a slab of bonito. We tried it and proceeded to wear the big snapper out. Try it, you'll like it.

I like a big pigfish for bait, I usually catch a few in my pinfish traps, I save them for the big rig. I like to use a 4/0 treble behind the dorsal, and usually clip the tail to make the bait erratic. I tried my best to lock down the drag on a 20lber a few weeks ago, line kept creeping, what a strong fish,.....LTM
