Alright- here's the deal. im sitting here about to try and make leaders for kings for a trip tomorrow on our 22 foot boat. but after reading all the reports about lack off kings, im kinda pessimistic about heading out on the water tomorrow. will i be able to catch kings within 20 miles tomorrow or will it just be a waste of time?
im also really interested on how to make a kingfish leader. i have all the neccesary supplies, im just a little confused. if anyone has any advice on my problems, it is greatly appreciated, and may save me a lot of time. so thanks in advance, michael

Hey Mike,
On leaders for kings, I have always used single strand stainless wire in #7-#9 size. I use a knot called a haywire twist, followed by a half dozen barrel wraps. Any good saltwater fishing book at the library will show detailed instructions. I use a swivel to attatch the leader to my line and tie the other end directly to my lure/hook. I fish relatively light line for kings, (12-30) and I usually use 3-6 ft of 50-80 lb. shock leader between my main line and the leader. If you use a bimini twist on your main line and tie the twist to your shock leader (again, check out a good book on knots), you will have a strong setup capable of handling any smoker king out there.

I used to use black plastic coated
steel wire for kingfish but now more.
There's no doubt that the smarter kings
see this leader.
I just finished changing all my leaders
out to coffee colored sevenstrand 135#
wire. Worked great, caught 5 kings
out of freeport this past Saturday,
3 on game getter lures and 2 on
Rapala mackerel plugs.
Guy at Cut Rate tackle got me on to
this. He said the coffee colored leader
is actually less visible then the
shiny stainless wire. I can see
how it is less reflective cuz of the color.
So far so good. For the sevenstrand,
all you need to do is buy the right crimps
which in this case is the A4, it tells
you on the package which crimp to buy.
Cutrate was out of A4's so I used single
Berkeley #4 barrel crimps and they worked
too.
There were reports on the radio of
lots of boats at the SELump which is
about 10 or so miles out. The east
and middle banks are about 17miles.
I don't fish close in for kings. I have
had better consistency with larger kings
at 25 miles or more, that's nautical miles.
Good luck.
