SUBJECT: # 35472: Garcia/Mitchell 302 line Capacity

Submitted by bassingman from NORTH CAROLINA on 7/14/01 10:24:00 PM

Does anyone know the approximate line capacity of a G/M 302 saltwater spinning reel? I would like to knopw about 20, 30, and 40 lb. test.

Hi Bassingman, If memory serves me, the 302 held ~400 yds of 15#.

    That being the case, the aproximate capacities for the other line strengths that you mentioned are: - 20# = 320 yds - 25# = 280 yds - 30# = 215 yds - 40# = 175 yds

An old friend of mine fished a 302. The fish feared him!

    Tight lines! Maurio

I mostly use mine as an anchor line for King fishing from piers. Thinking about using it for Stripers in fresh water.

Are you saying I am old? LOL :-)

When I was 12 yrs old I mowed lawns most of one summer to buy a Mitchell 302. I lived on Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach Fla. I Charged a dollar and a quarter for a regular sized yards and dollar seventy five for a corner lot. The price of yardwork has gone up a little since 1965!

After I paid 23 bucks for my reel,(a fortune to me!) I started riding the base shuttle bus to Wayside Pier(Now the Okaloosa Co. Pier) 3-5 times a week for the next 4 yrs.

I caught tons of Bonito, lots of Kingfish,(up to 36#) Bluefish and the occasional Shark. However, the highlight of my childhood pier fishing career had to be the day I hooked a Sailfish. He stayed on for 3 or 4 jumps then threw the hook. Man, I thought I was a big time hot shot that day. LOL!

As always happens, about the time I turned 16, I discovered girls and cars and my trips to the pier were pretty infrequent after that.

I have some wonderful memories of those summers spent fishing on that pier overlooking the Gulf Of Mexico.... I sure do miss those simpler times and that ol' Mitchell.

Maurio's recollection is good, I keep mine loaded with 300 yds. (+/- a little) of 20 lb.; used to keep 400 yds. of 15 lb. on it. Not old, Bassingman, just well seasoned. The price must have gone up a little when I got mine at the Navy Exchange on Adak in 1967, $26 or $27, a big fraction of the monthly take-home pay for an E-3. Used it for catching halibut on Adak, and carried it on the ship all over the Pacific. Most exciting thing I ever hooked with that rig was the Hong Kong liberty boat in the middle of the harbor; not up to full speed, but still managed to strip 100 yds. of line before I could get out my TL29 (for you non-Navy types, that's a folding knife) and cut the line. Don't know if you can still get parts; I suppose the drag will wear out some day. Wash off the salt after every trip, keep it lubed, and it looks like it will last forever.
