Brett (24.190.223.96) from NEW JERSEY says Bullet proof reels but...
they are old school. If you don't care about all the technological improvements like instant antireverse or rotor balance to remove wobble while cranking then these are the reels to buy. They have great drags and will last for years if given moderate care. I like them much better than the Penn SS reels and I don't even own one. I bought the Penn's and use them a lot but if I had to do it again I would buy the Daiwa BG's. My buddy has the Daiwa BG's and I have fished them numerous times and they are much smoother than the Penn's, both drag and overall functioning.
Now if you are looking for all the bells and whistles of a newly designed reel look at a Shimano Stradic or Daiwa Tournament SSII. These are more recent designs that cost about 50-75 bucks, per reel, more than the BG's but feel like a million bucks in my opinion.

rb (165.247.3.213) from RHODE ISLAND says ?Durability?
I know what you mean about the newer reels with all the bells and whistles but are these proven to withstand the saltwater environment??
It seems like most of the surf bunch use either the BG or the Penn Z or SS series.
There must be a reason for this!!!!!!!!!!
Could it be "Why mess with something that works!!"
