I fished the Pamlico for many years and never had much luck catching a tarpon. I have seen a few, but probably never had the right approach.

I have heard that some of the best places to catch them are between Indian Island and the Pungo River. I have also heard that the best strategy is to chum with small pieces of cut bait, then free line a large bait (peeler crab, menhaden, mullet, pinfish, etc.) in the chum line and wait.

If it helps any, the only time I saw one, I was between Indian Island and Reeds Hammock.

I have also heard that they can be caught around Oriental.

Good luck, and drop me a line if you catch one.
