SUBJECT: # 36164: Striper Fishing at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

I do a little saltwater fishing for stripers in the bay. I only go at night and usually do pretty good fishing around the pillings casting bucktails. What is the best way to catch them during the day.
Thanks

Seahunter from MARYLAND says Stripers
Drew,
It all depends on what size fish you want to catch. This time of the year, the easiest way to catch schoolies is to chase breakers. There will be more and more breakers showing up as the season progresses. If you want a better grade of fish, trolling would be the way to go.

We will get some breakers around the CBBT (during the day) in October but not as many as they get further up the bay...best bets for daytime would be casting plugs and plastics around the rock islands and also trolling small bucktails on wire along the span...the first island in to the small boat channel is good in early season...more and more breaking fish will show as the water cools...end of this month then on into late December.
Good luck

Foy from NORTH CAROLINA says CBBT rock
Drew-In November, when I usually go to the CBBT, we will normally start off working the pilings with bucktails, plugs, and Stingsilvers while continuously looking all around our position with binocs for birds showing breakers. If we see them, we'll run to the upwind or upcurrent edge and cast to them, or sometimes work all around the edge with deep trolled bucktails or Stretches for the bigger fish. Then, after a few minutes, someone else normally arrives and either runs through the school casting or trolling and it's back to the CBBT. If we're not picking up fish casting to the pilings and see no breakers, we'll deep troll alongside the pilings, the islands, and the tubes. Guys looking for the larger fish all troll the tubes, but we like the light tackle casting, so we only troll when casting is slow. Foy

Landlocked stripers in atlanta (12.92.216.212) from GEORGIA says Striper in the daytime
Before I moved to Atlanta, I had a lot of luck catch medium to small Stripers along the CBBT during the day by wire-line trolling along the bridge. 45 or 60# braided wire to a three way with a heavy sinker (16 oz. or more) tied to the bottom eye with a 2 to 3 foot piece of 20# mono, and a small (but large-hooked) bucktail or jig with a long porkrind tied to the horizontal eye with a long (20 foot,60#) leader. The idea is to fish on the current-into- the-bridge side far enough away from the bridge so that your little bucktail gets swept into the pilings as you pass them. You want your sinker bouncing along the bottom, hopefully missing snags as you do this. It kinda takes a lot of practice, but it's productive. You can also catch some good flounder doing it this time of the year. Tight lines. JRK
