SUBJECT: # 36726: Guatemala or Costa Rica

Submitted by tmk from GEORGIA on 1/16/02 4:29:00 PM

Starting to consider a "little sailfishing" trip to Central America possibly for the March timeframe. Guatemala or Costa Rica seem to be the primary destinations. Also, there seems to be a lot to choose from. Anyone had specific experiences, good or bad with any of the more popular ones. Need recommendations.

Terry

I researched everything myself, hotels, charters, rental cars, airlines. Chose to drive to and from the airport in San Jose' because we brought all our own gear and the shuttle flight limited us to 25# (my wife's luggage alone was 73#). We had a great time, released 81 sailfish, some YFT and dorado.

If I were to do it again, I'd choose Crocodile Bay fishing resort. There you have the options of offshore, nearshore and river fishing for more species and diversity of angling methods.

Email me if you want some info and websites to research.

I stayed at fins'n'feathers in Quatemala for 4 nights with 3 days of sail fishing. Big money but absolutely nutso good sailfishing. I think we caught something like 64 sailfish, over a dozen medium size Mahi. We wasted so many fish just playing with them with fly gear. If you want to catch them on FF gear, Quatemala is the place. You can probably line up a cheaper place to stay but I highly reccomend one Cap who works out of F&F. His name is Bud Gramer and he had the best crew by far and he puts in a mean full day. There were other more noteworthy, publicity type Captains, but he was hands down the best. Other guests at the resort felt the same way.

Costa Rica would be my choice if you plan on doing anything besides fishing. If it is a hardcore fishing trip for sailfish I would go to F&F in Gautemala. Just got back from CR in November and the sail bite started very early this year. If you want some info on CR captains I can give you a couple.
