SUBJECT: # 36733: Welcome reddog to galveston, tx. fishing

Submitted by fishnfetish from TEXAS on 1/17/02 11:14:00 AM

I've lived and fished the Galveston area for many years. Now my two sons fish more regularly than I do (although I now have 3 boats to fish in)! Now to respond to your question on surf fishing and pier fishing in the Galveston area. As you probably know Galveston is an island. East of it is the Bolivar Peninsula and west of it is San Luis Pass, Surfside and Freeport. There is good surf fishing in all these areas. Most have public access for vehicles and camping is allowed. At various times of the year you can catch speckled trout, redfish and sharks in the surf. I personally have not surf fished in several years (other than in a boat). Pier fishing is also readily available in the area. Most piers are private so you must pay to fish on them. Several piers in the area are good for trout (under the lights at night) and for reds during the run. These are the Gulfcoast/80th. St. Pier, 61th. St. Pier, and Flagship Pier in Galveston and the San Luis Pass Pier. There are also numerous jetties/breakwaters and rock groins in the area that are free and readily accessible, but they may get crowded and some are difficult to get your equipment out on. These are the North (across the ferry on the Bolivar Peninsula side) and the South Jetties in Galveston. There are also two jetties in Surfside/Freeport that are paved and you can easily carry or cart your equipment out on. My favorite pier or jetty is the one in Matagorda, about 100 miles south down the coast. It is free and there is a small park there with a nice paved parking lot. There is also a beach east of the pier where you can surf fish. The people there are friendly and it usually is not too crowded. If I were new to the area I would try the Freeport jetty first. It is not crowded but you must go around through Freeport to get to it. Good luck and welcome to Texas and our great fishing!!!!!

I have a boat (not a wonderful one) and I have a friend that goes fishing with me on the weekends. The thing is I want to go during the week and he is not able to make it out there with me.

But sometimes I have no idea when I should take a day off to do some fishing. Do you know of a good website I should look at that would tell me what the direction the wind is blowing in and if it is too choppy to go in a john boat? Any help would be greatful..

    Thank you in advance.
