It all depends on the boat if ya need a deckie or not. Lots of offshore captains fish tuna, marlin etc off Louisiana without mates every single day. I have done it without mates before as well as seeing other capt's out there running solo. Most of these guys are running 25-31 foot center consoles offshore 10-60 miles and trolling, live baiting, and bottom fishing. Cuts down on the amount of people that are in a 26 footer and lots of times the crew loves being involved and helping with the lines.

Thought it was interesting about the charter customers wanting to be involved and work the cockpit. That's one of my main complaints about the few offshore charters I've been on is that it doesn't really feel like fishing. You basically stand around until they hook a fish and then they hand you the rod. I'm no expert or anything, but I can rig baits, etc and on my own boat actually find and catch fish on occasion :) If I could find a charter where I actually got to FISH, I'd be tempted to sell my boat and just go on 12-15 charters a year. It'd be great to let somebody else clean the boat, do the maintenance, find the fish, find the bait, haul all the gear, and all the other crap that adds hours of work to the hours of fun. From the charter operators perspective, I can see why they might not be comfortable with that, but that's just my opinion anyway.
And what's up with all the LA fishing articles I've seen about the big mako and YFT? Is there a hot streak going on over there or just a coincidence?

We always have those size fish hanging around. Two years ago it was even better as we were hooking into 175-200 pound plus class yellowfin every day pretty much with live mullet. I am sure some of the captains had state records hooked up but just couldnt get them in. Now we have landed a couple of them actually the number 1 and number 3 yellowfin in the state and the biggest recorded mako as well. Mostly I just go on private boats to guide them and these people always want to help out and it makes for a more enjoyable trip.

The fact that you are a professional mate, and you insult me without knowing anything about me proves my point. I've paid for around 10 charters and hitched rides on a few more. This was the only time without a mate and it was my most enjoyable. I'm sure the people that pay to fish with you have lots of fun.

I agree, some charters really take the fun out of "fishing". They treat you like your morons. Some times they deal with an inexperienced crew, and thats fine. But when I board I try and let capt & mate know we are experienced anglers, and would like to be treated as such. Many just shake their heads yup, and then set hooks for you, hand the rods out of the holder, tell you more than you want to hear. I like to charter a boat when I am away from home, but many times regret it after because they take so much of the fun out of it.
Eddie, Im looking for a Chum Churn, great device you folks have down there. I have never seen one for sale, and woul;d like to get one for here. Thanx Rob
