Headed on family vacation to Gulf State Park. Heard they had a big pier for fishing. New to this type fishing. Any tips on what the family and I could use (tackle & bait) to catch some fish off the pier....
Thanks in advance

Carl (205.188.193.31) from ALABAMA says The pier is closed until Mid-July
I talked to the folks at the park last week. The repairs on the pier are much more intensive than thought & the repairs are taking much longer. They will most likely not re-open until mid July.
The surf fishing at the park can be very good for whiting, pompano & an occasional redfish. Fish with fresh dead shrimp (NOT frozen stuff). Best thing to do is go to one of the seafood stores on the west side of HY59 along the canals & buy a few pounds of fresh small shrimp.
Fish with medium spinning tackle (10# line & 7' rods is fine), a small egg sinker (1/4 - 1 oz, smaller the better), a short 15# leader & a #2 hook. Fish the bottom from the surf to as far as you can cast. You will probably actually see the whiting running in the surf about 10-40' off the beach. I did this last Monday & caught about 30 whiting in 2 hours. They are great eating.
Also carry some jigs or Gotchas with 50# leaders in case a school of spanish mackeral come down the beach.

Besides the good advice Carl gave, you might check out around the Perdido Pass seawall and jetties EARLY and LATE in the day for some hardtails (blue runner) skipjacks (ladyfish) bluefish and maybe other surprises. Another spot is around the pass at the mouth of Little Lagoon.
Carl, any particular spot you caught those whiting? I wanted to take my daughter down there for some surffishing, that sounds like the ticket! You can email me at pierpounder2001@hotmail.com Thanks ;-) David

Where are these located? Is surf fishing best around the pier or somewhere else? Thanks, Scott Woody

Brad (66.43.140.33) from ALABAMA says state park pier
I talked to the guard there Friday night and he told me that the final inspection of the pier would be June 28 and that the hoped that it would be open the next day. (I have my doubts due the amount of work that there is left to be done.)
I do hope he is right. I know that the lights must be covered with specks and flounder.

Perdido Pass is on the east side of Orange Beach. There is a seawall on the west side that can be really good for blues & spanish (jigs & live shrimp under a float, use short 50# mono leader). The east side of the pass out at the beach is also good surf fishing for specs, reds, pompano, whiting, spanish & blue.
Little Lagoon is on the west side of gulf shores between the beach road and Fort Morgan road.
