SUBJECT: # 37698: Fishing legend dies

Submitted by roughneck (167.21.1.225) from DELAWARE on 7/10/02 2:11:00 AM

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Captain Billy Verbanas of the "REEL-ISTIC", out of Indian River DE, died early Tuesday morning while trying to land a mako. He was pulled over by the fish, and surfaced shortly after. He then went face down, and couldn't be revived. Captain Billy was considered by many to be the best BIG SHARK fisherman on the east coast.

Words cannot begin to describe the man Captain Billy was. My condolences to his family friends and all that knew him. He will be greatly missed.

If I'm not mistaken, he was only 41. HE was a living legend. The best shark fisherman any where . He would routinely go 80-120 miles out to hit the Stream. If he was into records, he could have held them all. His bookings were always full. Goes to show- even the BEST can end up on the wrong side of the chines when a big fish if brought to the side. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE. An 80 lb. tuna can do the same thing if you're not balanced!

...on these boards since his passing. He is an IGFA Hall of Famer. There aren't many awards bigger than that in the world of fishing.

Thanks Reel, good thoughts. I guess we tend to focus on his other sport.

I am deeply touched by the loss of truly a gentleman among men. His sportfishing and sharking accomplishments will last forever but more than that the impression he made on everyone he touched and communicated with will never be outdone. If you talked to him on the radio and didnt know him you would be befrended immediately by Capt Billy. I have known him for many years as a fellow Captain and fisherman and he will always be held with high regard. Thanks for the tremendous contribution you have made to all of us in the world of sportfishing. Farewell my friend. You will not be forgotten. Capt Larry Sea Wolf Sportfishing.
