I am about to return home from Afghanistan and want to purchase 2 Calcutta 700 reels. Every place that I have seen so far lists them for $255. Does anyone know of any retailers that might have them on sale right now? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rich

mcgolfer from OKLAHOMA says online sales
you can get them a little cheaper through campbellsprotackel.com or go to ebay and bid on a few or use the buy it now feature on ebay. they are not many places that discount shimano items. there were some better deals at campbells but the austrailian dollar is stronger now than it was a few months ago. rick

Watch for the duty tax on importing Shimano's. I got hit for $95. Sometimes they get you sometimes they don't.
Shimano price fix's their high end stuff so it's tough to find many deals on them.

Ollie Bear from CALIFORNIA says Shimano's are pretty much fixed on prices.
I got mine for $225 on a rare sale. Actually, I and many others on the AllCoast Web site find the 700 to be too large for what it is, and not large enough for what it could be. The construction is high end, but the reel frame if too large for the spool capacity; 310 yards of 20# is not that much. Yet put it up against a Penn GS 545 which carries 420 yards of 20# and it could fit right into the 700's frame. The Penn GS 545 could easily hold 380 yards of 25#, while the 700 is only rated for 240 yards of 20#.
The large fram size to the relatively small capacity makse it too large to fit on a rod rated for the line capatiy. It wobbles. Yet, it is too small for a rod that fits the reel frame comfortably.
Many owners are thinking twice about the 700.

Ditto Ollie Bear, It's a well made reel but not for the money. I have two and have had problems with the "clicker" it does not seem to take a lot of abuse. I fish Sails out of Florida and put #20 line on it and when one hits you can count on starting the engins and the chase is on! For less money look at the TLD's or Penn 975

i do not see what the fuss is. i have caught red drum about 20lbs, cobia about 30 lbs and stripers to 50 lbs with a 700 and never got spooled. the drag is smooth as duck butter and i cranked it down as needed for 20 lb line. obviously these are not sails but the reel has performed very well either trolling or sight casting. the only advice i have for purchase is check the catalogs esp bass pro saltwater issue. good luck. wally o
