SUBJECT: # 37761: Word of caution on inflatable life jackets.

Submitted by Jerk (205.188.209.14) from NORTH CAROLINA on 7/22/02 12:23:00 AM

I kept my Sospenders locked in my electronics box in its original zippered pouch. First thing I saw today when I got to my boat was that someone had busted into my electronics box. When I opened the door to see what was missing, I discovered that my vest had inflated, from the high heat I suppose, and it had tried to bust out instead of someone breaking in. Did a number on the box, pushed the bottom down and cracked it in three places, both bottom corners of the door opening and right down the middle from the lock. As if that wasn't bad enough, it must have then punctured itself because it was flat when I got there. I haven't checked it out yet. So, you might want to think about where you store them, and give them room to inflate without damaging themselves, or something else.

The co2 just fizzled out. That's why there's a mouth piece so that you can blow real air in the membrane when this happens. Thanks for the warning, I hear this all the time!

My SOSpenders inflated one night when I left them in a storage locker on the boat. I had left the boat in the water overnight to fish the next AM. Foggy, humid night, was enough moisture to trigger the bobbin.

Jacket tested fine after I replaced the inflation kit. I no longer leave the jacket on the boat.

BTW, these inflatables should be tested at least once a season and inspected often. Your life could depend on them working!

    Be Safe!
