SUBJECT: # 37909: 39' Contender and 23' Rabalo accident in Miami Area??

Submitted by Skipjack (206.148.104.225) from FLORIDA on 9/4/02 10:55:00 PM

I saw a short blob in the Jacksonville Times Union, that a 28' Contender CC and a 23' Rabalo had an accident in the Miami area and someone was killed. Anyone have the details?? The article said no one was charged.

It was a 28' (according to the papers - they probably meant a 25' or 27') Contender that was running 25 mph or so through a slow, no-wake zone after dark and hit a 23' Robalo; one fellow in the Robalo was killed and his girlfriend was injured. The captain of the Contender stated that he doesn't remember anything about the accident, but alcohol was found in his boat. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed yet. The accident happened in the Intracoastal Waterway at Juno Beach, FL, right by a boatramp/park, in an area that's a bit tricky to navigate at night due to numerous, unlit docks that extend well out from the shoreline.
