SUBJECT: # 37912: Homemade Push Pole and holders

Submitted by Big Bend Brian (128.227.73.18) from FLORIDA on 9/6/02 12:06:00 PM

I’m hoping for ideas and suggestions from people who have made their own push pole and push pole holders? I plan on making an inexpensive push pole for my 16 foot jon boat and I figure myself and others can build a better push pole with comments and suggestions from those who have already built one or two.

Any material suggestions and tips that you would offer if you had to do it all over again would be appreciated? I would like to keep it as a low cost project.

In the past I purchased a ten foot 2 inch pole from Home Depot, sanded it down, and put a PVC “T” on the end and it worked fine for duck hunting. One broke but the second was a little stronger. This time, rather than keeping it loose like I did in my old duck boat I plan on modifying a PVC pipe (partially cutting 3 pieces) to contain the pole in the boat. The idea would be to snap it into these three holders (under tension from a slight bend). Any other ideas on these holders?

One questions deals with if I should varnish it with Marine Spar to keep it from absorbing water and getting heavy? Thanks. Brian

Bass Pro has a pole that collapses and with the foot, its only about $ 35.

Sometimes you can call a push pole mfr. like Moonlighter in North Miami, Fl. and will find that they might have a broken one long enough for your needs at a reasonable price, like $75 and up, with point and foot. I bought a 14 footer that way for ducking. I do not feel that a PVC one will work as it will flex way to much. Others on the Florida Sportsman Magazine site have tried it and come back with a reply of softness. You really ought to look for a used fiberglass pole rather than spend the time for a substitute for the right item. I've used and owned an aluminum one and found it to be an agrivating item to use. They fill with water and it drains each lime you lift it, and the water in it, out of the water. There are several pole mfr's in Florida to check with. Check the net with a search.

Made by Fiber-Tex in Corpus Christi. Sorry i do not have their web site. Way below others in price, and quality is there. CYO
