Dunk from NEW JERSEY on 9/6/02 6:49:00 PM
I've got a shot at 5-6days near Nags Head the middle of this month.(next week) I'm taking the 17 Mako down and need some info on Kingfish and Dolphin. If the weather is flat I've got the fuel for 30-35 off, but who can count on the weather?? We don't need smoker size Kings...can they be found within 10 miles of Oregon inlet? Trolling Ballyhoo or spoons?? How about bottom fishing? Is there any sense to figuring anchoring up ahead of the near inshore reefs, chumming and flatlinning back with bait?? Sorry guy's I've never fished the Outer Banks and I don't know how to treat the fishing...do I fish Key's style or stick with Jersey style fish'n... Thanks...........

I think that would fit nicely with the fishing ethics you expressed below in post #37902.

The Englishman (68.65.157.84) from PENNSYLVANIA says OBX Fishing
Dunk:
Just returned from a week fishing on the Outer Banks . We always fish out of Hatteras as the Gulf Stream is closer and Hatteras Inlet is generaly easier to navigate in rough conditions.
We caught dolphin, fat alberts, and baracuda off a weed line 5 to 8 eight miles from the inlet. This weed line has been there all summer, most of the charter boats have been filling their boxes on it before going deep. Best baits are trolled ballyhoo behind Seawhitch and 8-0 hooks on a 150 mono leader. We troll at 5 to 8 knots off the weed line using a S pattern.
We saw king being caught just outside the inlet last Friday on slow trolled live bait off downriggers . Live bait can easly be caughtin the inlet or docks using squid on small hooks ( pin fish, pig fish, etc) or cast netted.
We fish a 20 ft Welcraft CC and have been caught out by fast moving storms that build over the Sound, sokeep monitoring the weather channel when you are out there.
There is a free launch at Oregon Inlet. Most ramps in Hatteras charge $5 to launch and park your trailer.
Hope this helps you out, thanks for your past advice.

Rick (206.156.86.225) from NORTH CAROLINA says O.I. & Hatteras
Dunk- If you're going this week you don't have to worry about the ocean, the tropical storm with take care of your choices.
Hatteras Inlet will put you in better king areas. There are several artifical reefs and numerous wrecks within 5-10 miles of the inlet. These spots are perfect for live baiting and will hold plenty of 15-20 pound fish and maybe a few 30-40 pound smokers. There are school kings, snakes, that can be caught trolling drone spoons off the beach in 45 to 50 foot water. As mentioned above, there should be weed lines forming within 10 miles of the inlet that will hold dolphin, sailfish and maybe a wahoo.
Out of O.I. there are two sloughs name "First" and "Second" these will hold kings and so will Whimble Shoals. O.I. can get rough. There is a alternative "gerry jug" marked channel that parallels the bridge, follow a charter boat, this cut will take a bunch time off your run to the inlet versus the state marked and maintained channel.
Another good bet, just for fun, would be to trailer over to Manns Harbor and fish around the Croatan Sound bridge for stripers. Live eels around the bridge is the sure trick.
Let me know if you need specifics. I'll be glad to e-mail you GPS numbers for the reefs and wrecks. I've got a couple of sites that I can send you to for current fishing reports.

Nasty (47.234.0.51) from NORTH CAROLINA says Kings...
Dunk,
USe cigar minnows slow trolling for the kings. If you can't use live then frozen is OK. Hank Browns hook-up lure is best for these. I use hoo's for dolphin trolling around 6-7mph. Set the drag tighter for the dolphin and that will keep them from tail walking so much, and loosing some of them.
Good luck.
