Submitted by Rdc (199.170.89.159) from TEXAS on 9/14/02 1:52:00 AM

O.k. i just bought a 28' boston whaler and i need to rig it with rods,reels,ect... i will fish mostly for tuna and billfish but will do a little kingfishing to. i only want to have 2 diffrent set-up's, one for trolling and one for sitting still. what would be my best 2 bets on rods & reels.

I would set up with standup trolling rods in the 5-9/6-0 long range for trolling you can also double these over for chunking while sitting still as well but if you want a chunking outfit and a trolling outfish I would get four tiagra 50wlrs for trolling and then 4 TLD 50s for chunking as they are quite a bit lighter which makes it easier to hold while feeding line out. I would run 80 on all the tiagras and 50 on two of the TLDS for when the tuna are finicky and 80 on the other two for when they are more aggressive. You also need to get a pair of big spinning rods to be used for casting poppers to surfacing yellowfin and blackfin. Load them up with 65-80 pound powerpro. Hope this helps you out and post more questions about tackle if you need to. Capt Eddie the guide who goes on your boat for big yellowfin.

RDC, It is a little hard to answer your question without knowing your money limits or if money is no object. It is almost impossible to give you trolling rod/reel suggestions if you expect to kingfish with the same rigs you are marlin fishing with. I'm also not sure what still fishing is unless you mean bottomfishing. These are some middle of the road recommendations Here goes; I am a Shimano man And TLD 15's are great kingfish reels spooled with 20 to 30 lb line. Mount those on anything from ugly sticks to even light stand up Penn rods (12 to 30 lb class) and you have a sporting outfit. For bigger trolling I use TLD 25's but if you plan on catching Marlin go to the two speed TLD's they have a bigger line capacity and drags(I think 30 II to 50's but I'm not sure of model numbers)For rods I really like the Ocean Master series sold at Bass Pro Shop/ Offshore Angler. Go with at least 20 to 50lb class stand up up to 30lb to 80lb class. For bottom fishing any Penn 4/0 Senator with a stout rod with at least 30lb.line for snapper grouper fishing..... Hope this helps Good Luck..

Whatever brand you elect to buy, buy them already mated to oneanother. If you buy a rod and reel seperate the price will be far expensive than if you buy the rod and reel combination. There are some pretty good deals out there. Shop around.

Send me an email. I've learned quite a few lessons in the last several years regarding tackle and maybe I can save you some stupid tax. My requirments as of 4 years ago were very much like yours......
