SUBJECT: # 38102: Any good books?

Submitted by DanH (12.222.72.215) from INDIANA on 11/19/02 2:38:00 PM

Does anyone know of any good books on Saltwater/Surf fishing? I know the best way to learn is to do it, but I am from Indiana, so I dont have any chances to do that up here. I want to be as well prepared for my trip down to Gulf Shores next week (6 days, but who's counting?) as I can be. Also, any advice on what gear to bring with me?

Tight lines all...

Dan

What kind of fishing will you be doing? Your gear will follow what your fishing needs are. Will you be there in 6 days or be fishing on a boat for 6 days? What is your fishing experience? Will you be on a charter? Most charter guides will teach and rig up for you.

I search and search for good books on saltwwater fishing and it just doesn not get very good, especially on regional stuff. Some of the thin hardback books from Saltwater Sportsman like "Inshore Fishing" and "Saltwater Fishing" aren't bad, but very basic. Most of the other books are either very dated using 1960-1980's photos and equipment like Peter Goad's "Saltwater Fishing", or written in England in cramped English vernacular and not useful in terms of fishing style or applicablility.

Learn the knots. They are probably the most critical and under-developed skill. That knot is what connectss your expensive line, reel, and rod to your trophy fish. You knot need to know 50 knots, just a few basics, Palomar or uni for terminal gear, uni to uni to splice lines, and double surgeon's knot for making loops (I like it better than the dropper loop knot).

We will be staying at a beach house near Ft. Morgan from the 26th of November until Dec 1st. I will mainly be doing alot of surf fishing from the beach as I hear alot of the charter services have closed down for the season. So basically, I will be fishing so that I can eat something besides turkey on Thanksgiving! :)

Ft. Harrison was a nice place, now they have closed it down and are using it for various civilian activities, although there is some very limited military usage of it, mostly financial stuff from what I hear.

Any ideas on what will be biting when I am down there and how to catch them?

    Thanks Ollie!

There are so many, but here is a brief list of some of the best: A.C. Becker Jr. authored 3 How, Where and When books, Redfish, Speckled Trout and Flounder. No Nonsense Guide to Coastal Fishing by Pat Murray. Larry Bozka also wrote an excellent book on nearshore fishing and Chester Moore wrote a good one on Flounder fishing. The Compleat Surfcaster by C. Boyd Pfeiffer covers surf fishing. As far as gear goes, just take your bass/walleye fishing tackle. It will work just fine for trout, flounder and reds. Make sure that you rinse your tackle off thoroughly after each day's fishing. Most importantly, have fun...

Do you have your own stuff? Got a nice 7.5-8' musky rod? Daiwa SLX 40 with 15-20 pound line or a Calcutta 700, or a Penn GS 535/545. Abu Garcia C3 6500 works real well too, and cheaper. Or a spinning gear if you prefer a coffer grinder. Some 1-2 ounce pyramid sinkers, put some loop knots and hooks, use sandworms, sandcrabs, mussel or clam meat, for bait, strips of frozen squid, or pieces of perch.

Thanks to DanH above for the book listings. Best of luck.
