SUBJECT: # 38911: Penn 210 or Mag 10

Submitted by Cory56 (66.32.12.236) from CALIFORNIA on 12/12/03 2:59:00 PM

Hey guys,

Thanks for your help on this.

Can you tell me the difference between these two reels?

I am looking for a "party boat" reel for 20-25 lb line & am trying to keep it simple.

Thanks again.

Neither are particularly good reels. They just don't really have the guts to do west coast party boat, particularly if you get into a 20# or greater fish, which is not that an infrequent occurance. I'd recommend a Penn 140 (squidder, and a great casting reel) or a Penn 500. Both strong drags, Standard for party boat fishing and a much better value for the money. Easy to get serviced and they last. I'm still fishing 3 (Penn 140, 2-500's) that I bought in the 60's. I've replaced few parts and they're still working good ! JMO Thor

Penn 535GS for 20 and 25lb line. Oversize drags and they cast great.

Second the GS recomendation. While the old style penns are workhorses and will get the job done, it is now the year 2003, and soon to be 2004. No reason to put up with a reel that eats line, has no casting control, and is very, very slow and has been unimporved since 1960( added mag controls on the 10 are wasted with the clunky levelwind it has). GS are huge improvement, handle all of them and you'll see. If your looking for a levelwind try a gt310,325 etc. Gear ratio and spool diameter are the key to a fast retrieve and help keep line tight on a fast fish, the reels you mentioned have neither.(and their real clunkers to boot) happy new year all.
