SUBJECT: # 39146: superbraid to mono knot

Submitted by Wally o (149.174.164.18) from NORTH CAROLINA on 5/18/04 3:45:00 PM

i am considering putting superbraid onto an offshore reel. what is the best knot to connect the braid to a topshot of either mono or flourocarbon line? also, do you need to put a layer of mono on the spool before spooling the braided line? thanks---wally o

I use a double uni knot with at least 7 wraps on the braided side, at least five on the mono/flouro side.

Instead of using mono for backing, I use a layer of medical cloth-backed adhesive tape around the spool to keep the braided line from slipping.

Wrap the spool a few times. Don't worry about being perfectly flat. The crinkles help keep the line from slipping as well.

THe best spectra to mono connection is the bimini on the spectra and the albright on the mono connection.

I use uni-to-uni knot with 5 wraps on each side for mono to flouro lines.

Seems like lots of guys use tape on the spool to keep Spectra line from slipping, but a layer of mono will be more secure. The Spectra wants to slip on the spool because (a) it's slick in the first place, so friction for a given force against the spool is lower, and (b) it doesn't stretch, so it's harder to develop and maintain the tension that provides the friction; when the end starts to slip, all the following turns slip right along with it without increasing the friction. Tape addresses only the former, by making the spool soft under the line; Nylon mono not only grips the spool better than Spectra, its greater stretch works like a spring to hold it tighter against the spool.

For an analogy, consider which is easier to tie snugly around a tree: a piece of ordinary (low stretch) rope, or some springy bungie cord?

I use an Albright (sans Bimini) to attach mono to either end of my Spectra. If I get down to the couple yards of mono on my spool it's probably too late for the knot to save me anyway. At the other end my excuse is I've just never learned well enough to tie a Bimini.

I'd can the entire knot system and go with the spliced loop to loop connections. Easier through the guides and more foolproof. Put an end loop in your spectra and then buy prerigged top shots. Changing them is easy and takes zero time. Respooling a 100 yd topshot takes less than 5 minutes. FOr the end loop use a bimini or a 6 turn surgeons knot with a drop of superglue tossed in for good measure. you pay a little more for the prerigged topshots but I think its definitely worth it in ease and reliability. I also use a little mono as backing to get a bite on the spool and attach it to the mainline spectra with a doubled or quadrupled uni knot. Size doesn't matter, only strength as i will most likely never see it again. Take care and hope it helps.
