SUBJECT: # 39148: need some advice re trooling rod/reel for tuna, dorado

Submitted by bob (67.171.232.30) from OTHER on 5/20/04 6:10:00 PM

Could you suggest a good, medium priced trolling combo for these? I've beencatching them trolling/casting with fly rod, but am new to conventional tackle. There seems to be a lot of combos in the $200, range; I'd like to spend that or less... Is it like fly rods and reels -- they're mostly good, just choose one -- or is there a brand (Penn, Shimano etc.) that seems to hold up best? What do the charter people use? Thanks

You can get a very nice combo for under $200.00. The Okuma 20-30 would be a good choice also the Shimano TLD 25 is hard to beat.

A good serviceable combo would be a Penn 113H and a Shakespere Tiger rod. Fill it with 40 or 50 mono and you will be ready for almost anything. You can get a reel from E-bay for not much $ and a new rod from Cabelas for less than $60. The TLD 25 alone will cost as much as the whole outfit but it's good stuff. Everyone that's been around the saltwater for a long time has at least one Penn 112H.
