I've noticed more and more boats offshore using thru-hull mounted lights. My question is this, are they for show, or do they really work? Any help is appreciated.

I have 4 in the vessel that I own. When the tuna fishing is good, they do not make a difference. When fishing is tough is when they really seem to help turn a slow night in to a fair night. In my opinion the regular 12 volt halogens do a really great job of getting the bait to my boat and the tuna follow. The 12 volt I use are the BAULS, look on the website "livebaitwells.com. These are alot less expensive that HID 110 volt, but not nearly as bright. The extra brightness is great at the dock but means little that I can tell when your fishing.

I agree with Jim. I have the 12 volt in the vessel that I run. The difference is that the Flying fish readily come to these lights, allowing you to scoop them up, put them on a very small circle hook and hook a yellow fin, say in about 30 seconds or less after the flyer hits the water ! On the shallow reefs the amount of bait these things attract is astounding, tinker mackeral, big-eye scad, blue runners, ect. If you are serious about offshore, and you fish tuna or anything else at night these are a must have.
