SUBJECT: # 40002: Worst cast for fishermen at Cape Point, NC (Buxton Point)

Submitted by Gerry, BFHP from ALABAMA on 5/6/2008 6:46:00 AM

At approximately 4:30 PM I was called out of the water by the Park Service. They informed me that NPS Resource Managered had closed all access to the point to set up a buffer area for nesting terns. The NPS said they expect the closure to be in place until August.

The interesting thing about this is that the birds set-up their nest while off road vehicles were coming and going to the point and it didn't seem to bother them. Also I find it peculiar that the buffer zone that was established by the NPS is a larger rather narrow rectangle that extends from the nesting area to the water line. IMHO a true buffer would have been circular. Also I think that the NPS could have shown a little sensitivity to the fishermen and allowed a very narrow access strip near the high tide line.

Fishermen will only have a voice it in matters like this if we take the time to speak out as individuals and as a group. Contact the NPS at http://www.nps.gov/SER/sendmail.htm?o=82%2833NJ%2B%3AH%3BJ%3BJ1ZN%5B1ZDHV%3A35IP2L8%2E%29%0A&r=/caha/contacts.htm and let them know how you feel about them closing all access to one of the best fishing spots in the world.

Also remember Toyota is a proud sponsor of the Audubon Society --- the people that spearheaded the suit to close human access to the National Sea Shore!

Your assessment seems logical to me.

Notification 'news' seems logical too, but that is just me I suppose. No signs, no buoys, no notices, no nothing gives the patrol guys plenty of opportunity to display their ....A-U-T-H-O-R-O-T-E-E !

    SA

    Fishermen get no respect!
