I am headed to Destin the 1st week of April for a family vacation and was hoping to fish off of the beach for anything that will bite using artificials only. Will probably only have time to fish at daybreak til 8 a.m. and need some help/advice on what to use. Just for fun, not food! Thanks!!

MikeF from FL says I used to
I used to fish off the beach in the Destin area all the time. We used to go there with the kids for spring break. If you want to use artificials only you will need a long rod with a good spinning reel because you will need all the distance you can get. Use a 1/2 oz original gator spoon in gold (link http://www.gatorlures.com/m_19.asp?c=14&pa=m_19) on light line. You'll need to wade out chest deep to cast far enough to get to the fish but there will be blues, spanish and ladyfish out there that will hit that spoon. They will also hit fluke style baits but it's hard to get enough distance. I change the treble on these hooks to a 2/0 Gammy livebait hook so it'll be easier to get them off.
There is also real good shark fishing for big sharks after dark but it is frowned on by the hotels.
