SUBJECT: # 27115: question about a used outboard...

Submitted by Dave (67.84.145.190) from NEW JERSEY on 3/3/05 11:20:00 PM

I'm thinking about replacing my current engine, a 1992 90hp evinrude with a used merc, 2000-2003, 90hp...I'd like to go into my local Merc dealer that I've been dealing with for about 20 years and ask if there's someone looking to upgrade their power...he's also a tracker dealer and even thought I don't follow tracker, from what I've heard, they tend to underpower their packages...my hope would be that someone wants more power and has decided to upgrade...so, my question is, what's a used 90hp merc 2-stroke worth now adays, (from 2000-2003)...with complete rigging, etc...I want to make sure it's within my budget before I start wasting peoples time...knowing this place, they won't sell me junk...ie: been used and abused, (since they've probably done more of of the maintence on it)...

reasons for the repower...

I have an older son who wants to head offshore more and more and with fresher power, I'd have more confidence in the engine.

Moving the oil tank from the console to the cowling, opening up space for a second battery.

My last question, what would a 1992 evinrude with rigging go for? I'm sure I could save some $ just replacing the evinrude with another evinrude but, like I said, I have a really good working relationship with the Merc dealer about 5 minutes from my house...

I've thought about holding onto the evinrude until it dies but I think it's time for an upgrade...

Thanks for the suggestions...

Dave

If you want new power, why by used? You could put a brand new 90 HP Johnson on the Transom for less than 6 grand. A new Merc would be about the same but the rigging would cost extra. I would not want to purchase a used engine off a boat that was underpowered due to the lug factor. Check the pricing on these new engines @ http://www.edsmarinesuperstore.com/. You might be able to sell your old engine for $1,000-$1,500.

You can sell the 92 90hp in about an hour if you advertize it in local paper. Ed's mentioned above has new Johnsons for 5k plus 350 shipping, no tax. You'll need a new wiring harness, about 125 bucks.

You'll pay that for a used 2-3yr old Merc 90hp locally. This next part is the important part...

The Merc being 3 cylinder inline engine won't have near the get up and go punch the V4 Johnson has. Those engines on the same boat...the Merc may match it for top end speed, but by the time the Merc get's the boat up to speed all that will left to race will be the 2 stroke fumes the Johnson left behind.. An inline engine, especially one with one less cylinder, is no match for a V block engine. Considering some of these white water Jersey inlets some balls under the throttle is nice to have when you've got a 6ft breaker on the transom trying swallow you..

Check out the "salty Dog" news paper. It is available in NJ. I have seen amazing prices on merc and yamaha engines. They often have "factory reman" engines with a new gurantee for a lot less money. I agree with Roby new is the way to go and as allways, I agree with Dunk about needing a lot of hole shout power. Also check out http://www.boattraderonline.com/engpartsearch.html for great prices on new engines.

Thanks for the replies, they are greatly appreciated. I had thought about a new engine but it's not in the budget right now...I guess my thought is to pickup a newer engine, tool around in it for a couple of years and then upgrade to something a bit bigger. I currently have a 17' Whaler and I've been itching, along with my son, to head offshore a bit farther than before, having a newer engine would give me the confidence to do so...I also have a 4 stroke 5hp kicker on the back for trolling and just in case...right now weight is not an issue but with the newer engines, optimax and the 4-strokes, it will become an issue in short order. It's rated at 410#s for the transom...

I was thinking, the "used" engine would give me at least a few years of worry free use and when it's time to move up, provide me with fresher power at a smaller depreciation rate than if I went "new"...

I have a feeling that I'm probably better off with this current engine, compression checked out last year all within a few PSI of all the cylinders...Judging from what Dunk says, I'll be really disapointed with the performance of the newer engine...food for thought...If I didn't have a kid heading for college in 3 years, this would be a really easy decision to make!

I'm thinking the same thing while I was typing above. I'm running an 87 110 Rude and it runs perfect now that I got that crazy power pac problem cured.

If that 92 doesn't have more than 1500hrs on her there's no reason to go looking at anything else. Give her a good decarboning, throw some new L77-JC4's in her and let her run.. Check this link for how to decarbon. You want to use the spray down the carb throat method..
