SUBJECT: # 27860: Tohatsu 50 HP

Submitted by Scott (71.77.222.206) from NORTH CAROLINA on 11/27/2007 5:56:00 PM

I just bought a 50 HP carburated Tohatsu that runs rough at low RPM's but is fine once you give it some gas. I have noticed that the primer bulb on the fuel tank does not stay firm after I pump it up. The motor also starts up and runs better if I prime the bulb every time I restart it, I have heard that Tohatsu recomends disconnecting the fuel line when the boat is not being used because there is a seal in the gas connections that goes bad over time. Any Tohatsu guys out there that have any ideas? I bought this thing cheap and don't really want to put a lot more into it Thanks.

Assuming the spark is OK, check your fuel pump and all the hose and connections between the strainer/filter inside the cowl back to the gas tank. Some old fuel lines and parts don't like the alcohol in the "gas" these days. The fuel pump diaphragm does need replacing periodically. Also check the fuel tank vent. I had a problem that was similar and the culprit was an inline filter that was sucking air. My 90hp Toh is a 1989 that still runs like new. I almost wish it would die so I have an excuse to buy something more fuel efficient.
