I have a 185 Johonson where the fuel pump has gone bad. I was told I have two options. One replace the VRO with a new VRO. The second, is to replace it with a standard fuel pump. If the second is truely an option, how do I go about finding a standard fuel pumpt to fit? Bill

FreeOnBoard from TX says Might need to call a dealer
Bill, I had the VRO pump on my '88 V4 replaced with a non-VRO pump a few years ago during some other necessary shop work, and the part apparently wasn't hard to obtain since everything got done in one afternoon. This illustrated parts site http://ishopmarine.com/ishop/jsp/AsplIsmHomeCcat.jsp?reqFor=29&req4Browse=1&lvlCode=1&isFromCMS=false&hideAdd2CartButton=&isStandAlone=&is4CmsShop=&reqln=Unknown&reqem=Unknown&reqph=Unknown&pCode=A0000022&path=BMC~A0000022&isForSupStore=false&cCatFilter=&eCatSupFldr= shows the same present replacement part number BMC-5007423 for the VRO on your 185 as for my V4, so it's not too much of a stretch to guess that the non-VRO pump they used would fit your 185. I'll see if I can read the part number on the pump when I get home tonight, if the dealer can't help you.

FreeOnBoard from TX says Here's the info from my pump
A small sticker on the bottom reads "438287" and below that "24-D-1B". Unfortunately, I couldn't cross reference "438287" to any OMC or BMC part. The ishopmarine.com catalog shows "BMC-5007422" and "438402" as the part numbers for the pre-mix conversion pump, and the picture on page 122 looks like my pump, so that may be it. The connection diagram next to the picture is misleading, as it shows a VRO pump with oil line and oil warning harness which are not part of the pre-mix pump.
