SUBJECT: # 27888: Plug wires for the inline merc 90

Submitted by David R Pa. (72.70.219.250) from PENNSYLVANIA on 4/10/2008 8:22:00 PM

Thanks again FreeOnBoard for the previous help. I replaced the water pump and found out there is no thermostat for this engine - What a design! Now my focus is replacing the plug wires and the plugs even though they all fire, I want to up grade the condition so as to avoid future failures. The plugs are a no brainer unless you know something I don't. The question; do I need special spark plug wire for this m-900 or can I use a good quality auto parts store product as a replacement ? 1978-90 hp mercury inline 6 model m-900

David, I don't remember anything special about the Merc plug wires, but I had to do that with my 'Rude V-4 when one of the molded plug connectors broke right before the start of a 2 week fishing trip. Bought the shortest available silicon rubber plug wire from a parts store and still had to tie the extra length out of the way. I removed the plug to check for fouling several times during the trip and never had any problems. The practical problem will be to get the right length AND have good tight molded connectors on both ends.
