SUBJECT: # 27919: 1993 25 HP Merc Missing at High Speed

Submitted by Phytoplankton #14174 from CALIFORNIA on 11/14/2008 5:40:00 PM

I've got a 93 short shaft, two stroke 25 hp Merc outboard. Starts easy, idles great, runs fantastic until you hit high end, then it surges, like one cylinder is partially dropping out. Checked compression, timing, coils, head gasket/exhaust gasket, all check out good. No water intrusion in the cylinders. Had it in the shop, they can't get it to high enough speed in the tank to re-create the problem. Any ideas?

I'm going to swap the tank/hose out and see if that makes a difference.

Did you check the carb(s)? I have a 30hp evinrude that was having similar problems. The carb was gummed up resulting in the float sticking. I cleaned the carb and replaced the float. Runs like a top now.
