SUBJECT: # 27944: 78 vs 85 fuel consumption

Submitted by David R. (72.70.216.66) from PENNSYLVANIA on 11/11/2009 7:03:00 PM

! have a model 900 merc in line 6 cyc-90 hp. runs well - less than 20 hrs -doubt if it even has that on it. It is a 1978. I have access to an 1985 -in inline 6 for a very reasonable price & it is also a 90 hp. Questions are : Is the rating for the Hp the same on both motors and Is the fuel consumption different between these motors( for pushing the same vessel) ? Appreciate any input - thanks D.

David, sorry I don't know the answer to this, but sometime in the 80's the power rating method was changed from powerhead output to lower unit output. If the '85 is rated by the later method, it may have more uumph than the '78. On the other hand, there was an allowable +/- tolerance in both methods, so the two models might have identical output at the prop. If you can find out the displacement and carburetor throat size for both models, might be able to guess whether the '85 is more powerful. In any case, if that '78 pushes your boat OK now, I wouldn't expect any noticeable change in fuel consumption. FWIW (not much, but what the heck, it's Friday).
