I have a fishing boat that I don't want to bottom paint, unless absolutely necessary. It is a trailered boat. In April I'm taking the boat over to the Bahamas for a month, where it will be in a slip. The question is: How long can you leave it in the water before permanent damage?

A couple of years ago I trailered my 24' center console down to Marathon in May and left it in the water for 13 days. When I pulled the boat out, the only issue I had was the beginnings of hard growth on the underside of the "integrated" drive bracket. I assume the growth occurred only there because it's underwater, but not a "planing" surface. So the little critters didn't get washed off while running the boat.
If you run the boat at least every couple of days, and use a stiff bristle brush/sponge to scrub the underwater areas which don't get "cleaned" while running every 4-5 days, you should be ok without bottom paint. Like you, I would definitely avoid bottom paint if possible.

My experience mirrors Doug's. I leave my boat in the water for extended periods at our Key Largo dock. The worst thing I've experienced is a green alge growth which scrubs off pretty easily... unless you pull the boat and let it dry. Then it's a pain. I usually will jump in the water every few days and scrub the waterline with one of those rough scrub pads. Thats all the clean up required.
