SUBJECT: # 19279: Topaz v Blackfin

Submitted by Craig (198.139.192.245) from NEW JERSEY on 3/10/2001 7:48:00 AM

Currently own a 32' Blackfin Carey with twin TAMD 60A's 200hp Volvo's. Boat will cut thru anything under 5' without bouncing or jarring you since it has a 24 degree deadrise. However, it also rocks and rolls because of the deadrise. Don't really enjoy the rolling. Also, it's not exactly a speed demon at 15 knots @ 2200 RPM's. Looking at a 29' Topaz Bimini with Twin 200HP TAMD41A's. Supposed to cruise around 24 knots. Topaz has a 13 degree deadrise so it won't roll as much. Would appreciate any comments on quality of Topaz Bimini, seaworthyness in head seas (jarring) and rolling at anchor or drift. THANKS in advance.

Craig, Topaz is a great boat but I would be careful with the tranny's on the 41A's. If they are MS4A's, stay away. I had a pair of 41A's with MS4A's in my 31 Rampage and experienced 3 portside failure's. The engines ran great, alot of smoke but were very reliable. I know Volvo upgraded to the MS5'S(still mechanical) and finally to the HS1's which are hydraulic. I haven't heard of any HS1 failures, so I believe they finally found a match. In any case, alot of the old 41a's in Rampage's, Blackfin's, Topaz's have been upgraded with HS1's. You may be able to find one. You can obviously do the the upgrade yourself, I believe for around 10K for both.

Just don't get sick and you won't have to give up the Blackfin. Does seem slow, I'd repower.

In my opinion you would be making a huge leap backwards! Topaz is a "pencil popper" "flexi-flyer", if you have fillings you won't for long on a topaz. There not that bad but you would be regressing, repower the blackfin it's the same hull as the 31' bertram. You could find a pair of 3208's and she will do an easy 25knts.

Hey Craig.I have a 1981 28 topaz express. I have repowered her with 230 yanmars. The boat is a rocket ship now. I had volvos before, and I never had too many issues with them. The trannys were a bit touchy but I had mc donnell marine in conn take care of them for me. The volvos never left me anywhere even if they did get sick now & then. I have installed chine rails to my boat. I first got the idea from a fishing buddy. We used his boat first It is a 42 Hatt. We had remarkable results. We got the original idea from slane marine. Now my boat isn't nearly as wet as she was. She doesn't slam anymore in a head sea. I gained 2kts and increased my range because of the efficiency & greatly reduced the roll in a beam sea. If I can give you any more info let me Know
