SUBJECT: # 19317: Dunk/Anyone? Evinrude 225 Ocean Pro

Submitted by KevinA (207.67.70.61) from WISCONSIN on 3/13/2001 7:41:00 AM

I've located a possible 'new to me' boat & it has a low hours Ocean Pro 225 on it. I've always had mercs on my boats...mostly because that was the standard rigging, so I don't have much experience with this motor. (I do have a 1984 25hp Evinrude...runs like a swiss watch)

Are there any pluses or minuses on the Ocean Pro 225? Known problems that have been cured (or are curable without a major investment) or advantages that have stood the test of time? Excessively thirsty for fuel or oil? I take it the oil injection system has all the (way?) earlier bugs out? I think it has an heat/oil protection system on it...does it work as advertised? Any quirks to the motor that I should look out for on sea trial? What compression range should each cylinder have to insure that it's healthy? Things to check visually or otherwise on this specific motor? It's been run in saltwater for its life so far. I have no fear of Evinrude...this motor has been around for a long time, it's just a new animal to me.

I'm looking for comments specific to this motor...not really interested at this point if someone feels that a Yam/Merc/Suzi is a better powerplant...as the boat has a fresh 225 rude on it & it'll stay that way. Thanks in advance.

I had a 1988 that I ran from the dock behind my house for 10 yrs before selling to my neighbor with my old boat, its still running and no rebuild. Bought a 99' 225 John OP on my current 25'Chris, has 220 hrs on it and runs flawless. They are dependable motors. I run the tuner thru it every 50 hrs and I think it will last longer than me.....good luck

I have a 97 225 Evenrude that I purchased new it's on 24' Gradywhite. I have had zero problems, with the quikstart system it starts first time everytime no fuss. It's average on fuel for the size engine. Personally I think the only difference between Johnson and evenrude is the paint on the cover.

I think it's a good motor. I currently have a 94' Johnson 225 Oceanrunner thats pretty close to the same engine. I did need a new CDI power pack but nothing else - it went down on power soon after I started running it after former owner's winter layup (like a fuel restriction problem) but it was the power pack. I get 110 to 120 psi on all the cylinders but wouldn't worry if you see a little lower than that as long as they're pretty much even on opposing cylinders and close enough all around (different gauges sometimes show higher or lower than other gauges). I get about 2.2 mpg on a 23 ft'er w/5000 lb loaded at 4100 rpm cruise as long as it's trimmed right. It's a variable rate oil injection if you keep it, so it will use less than 50:1. Most people will advise closing the VRO off and doing the pre-mix thing, but I kept mine and I don't worry about it.

I have a 99' 200 that runs flawlessly. Run the decarb through it a couple times a season and you will be happy. I also run Carbon Guard with Johnson oil and when I checked the plugs, they are 99% free of carbon build up. Pete www.mullertackle.com

Purchased new twin 150's in 4/97, first 4 years have been an absolute joy 400 or so hours on each, 95% ocean fishing, not one lost day out of 150 trips due to engine problems, I should point out I do very little trolling I either run off an back and do lots of drift fishing and anchoring so lots of shut downs and start ups, gary.
