SUBJECT: # 19319: Experience with 1970's Ray Hunt designed Chris Craft 30' Tournament?

Submitted by Run N' Gun (4.21.194.130) from FLORIDA on 3/13/2001 9:59:00 AM

Recently learned about this boat. Designed by Ray Hunt, who was part of the team behind the great early Bertrams. They seem like very good boats and good candidates for restoration. Is it really a very good sea boat that can hold its own with the classic 31' Bertram?

I have a 28' in that year range. (72) I haven't put it in the water yet but so far I can tell you that it is an absolute tank. Very heavy, and very well made. I will have more answers in a month or six weeks, depending on my schedule. I really expect it to be one hell of a boat.

The Ray Hunt CC 30 Tournament is a fine boat. I fished one on a charter on Lake Michigan a few years ago and really liked it. The guy I fished with is one of three boys and their father who all are charter captains on Lake Michigan. Amongst the four of them they own 3 of the Ray Hunt Tournament boats (2 flybridge and 1 express) and one 31 Tiara express. The 30 Tourney was not made for very long in the mid-70's. They are very heavy, around 14,000 lbs., have a wide beam, fairly deep vee, and a nice bow flare. I can only speculate that the ride may rival a 31 Bertram. Someone on this board posted a few months ago that the CC 30 would run circles around the 31 Bert. One advantage that the CC 30 has over a 31 Bertram is the cockpit depth in terms of security. The gunwales will hit you well above the knee, instead of at the knee, like the Bert.

In terms of a restoration, you can probably find a CC 30 priced in the upper $20's. However, it will not have quite the cult following like a Bertram and, therefore, will probably not command the same resale price. Although these boats are getting more popular. If you are simply looking for a good solid boat to fix up and use for years, you can't go wrong. Look at the used boats for sale at yachtworld.com and check the CC 30's in there. Someone refurbished a Tourney express and repowered with diesels. I believe they are asking around $150k for it. One thing to look out for on the flybridge version is the cabin aft bulkhead. They tend to absorb water from the flybridge and rot. The express version is very rare.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your search.

    Regards, Jason
