SUBJECT: # 22399: Merc 50HP 4 stroke....anything to look for?

Have a almost new 2001 merc 50 4 stroke offered to me, with about 15 hours on it. Power tilt & trim, elec start. Guys looking for about $3K of your greenbacks for it (which is like 6K of our bannan roubles). I think new they are almost 4K of yours - 8 K of ours? Is there any known problems or weaknesses with the Merc 50hp x 4 stroke 2000/2001 models that I should know about? I've seen "an occasional post" in the past that the power head is yamaha, and thet they might crack a block occasionally under warranty.. Any substantiation of this?...anything else to look for? Plastic cam for the fuel pump or something? Whats a fair price do you think? The guy bought it new off a Merc dealer I know - and due to the large king tides, (~ 50ft) found it a bit underpowered for his boat. The dealer suggested it might be great for my 16ft alloy V bottom punt which is underpowered with it's current 25HP 2 stroke Mariner.
