SUBJECT: # 22481: Jackplate - Solenoid Wiring

I have a CRC jackplate, recently purchased the boat & the previous owner said he had to replace the relays once a year (OMC trim style). The jackplate moter has two wires, reverse polarity to go up/down. I'd like to replace these relays with some a little more reliable, Bob's machine shop in Bradenton sold me two solenoids at a boat show, and told me to call with questions on wiring, I called and he couldn't tell me how to wire. The problem is that I can get the hot wire to work, the problem is that the other wire has to be grounded. Any suggestions?

    I'm not real sure that I understand what your problem is but in general it works like this. As you probably already know a solenoid is just an electrically operated switch. It will have a terminal for input and and terminal for output of the high voltage line that you wish to control. That switched side of the solenoid can run either a positve or negative side current, but positive side is the most common way they are wired. It solenoid will also have two other terminals, and these have to be wired with a grounded (-) side and then the terminal that actually controls the solenoid, which would be the positive (+) side. If the thing isn't grounded here the solenoid will not work. Also, and this is rareley printed on the solenoid itself, there will be some minimum required voltage to drive the on/off function of the solenoid. So there are your two possibilites, it has to have a ground to work and there must be sufficient voltage present to activate it. Usually the required voltage to activate it is very low, less than 1 volt isn't a bit uncommon for solenoids (relays) up to about 30 amps capacity. Larger ones require more of course and your ground has to be of at least the same potential capacity as the hot wire. Make sense?

    Thanks, Thom. Here's some additional information that might help. The jackplate moter runs it up and down (obviously), but there is only two wires that run out of the moter, how would you wire this?

    I'm not even going to try and explain it. But simply the hot wire for up becomes the ground wire for down and vice versa. Call or email CMC and the will send you a jpeg wiring diagram. Helped me tremendously. I to discovered Bubba had wired it wrong and eliminated the breaker switch. Oh, I also recommend you find some Seimens five prong 40 amp relays. They actualy seal theirs. Most 18 wheeler parts houses should have them.

    Those square relays actually reverse the polarity of the power being feed to the unit when you throw the switch either way.. You have two wires. You reverse these on the battery terminals to change the direction the the jackplate moves. There's no phyisical way to do this unless you do it manually other than those relays.

    You don't need to re-wire. If you have the proper relays, you should simply be plugging them in. My larger concern is the indication that the relays are 'needing' replaced annually. I've run my CMC for the past 3 years and have replaced 1. I figured that was because I re-hung the plate on a different boat and wired to an existing floor mount switch which I kept forgetting to keep my foot away from. (kept resting my foot on one of the buttons)

    Anyway, figured I made the one relay pretty tired doing this. You can get these at NAPA and other locations but you shouldn't need to re-wire.

    Yes, it is a CMC, not a CRC, sorry.

    It's on a flats boat, the relays are in the bilge, and not very dry. The relays and wiring wasn't mounted in a dry place (which I pulled up out of the bilge)which I'm sure contributed to the problem.

    PB, that's exactly right, a reverse ground system, thanks for the correct terminology, that helps. I ended up getting new OMC relays and rewiring last night, I shrink wrapped everything including the inline breaker, all the connections, and a big shrink wrap around the relay, hopefully this will help.
